Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Clyde on a Trek SU200

Before I joined this forum, I had no idea what a Clyde was, but at 5'6", 250lbs, I'm gonna guess I'm a member of the club.

I got my new SU200 from my LBS, and will commute back & forth from work, as well as (hopefully) keep my car parked as much as possible. It's nice and light, hella quick (compared to my old Trek 820), and IMHO is the hottest looking bike out there.

My only worry is about how it's going to handle my fat ass. It's completely stock right now, but iIs there anything I need to keep an eye out for, or upgrade to make it more suitable for a fatty like myself?

I'm about the same weight. I would think you should be OK as long as you avoid potholes and other wheel straining jolts.

That bike is made for heavy duty urban riding. Don't abuse it, but it won't fall apart under you.

It's a stock Su200 as of now. I haven't even put my blinky lights on it yet.

I learned that lesson on my 820. I launched off a curb & landed pretty hard. Blown tire, bent rim, and $50 later I figured I'd keep 2 wheels on the ground at all times.

Is there a difference between "commuter" & "urban" bike?

I'm going to use it to get back & forth from work, a 6 mile round trip voyage, but I also plan on riding it around town for errands & such. If it's anything like my 820, the only dirt it will see will be between cracks in the sidewalk.

Does this bike have the 29er wheels?

An urban bike will usually have a stronger frame and wheelset then a commuter. You'll have a blast with this bike.

I have one of these. Bought it last year after a 20 year hiatus from cycling (last bike 1984 Schwinn Sierra which i am rebuilding). I don't want to come off as a fan boy or nothing, but I beleive that this bike offers the "best bang for the buck" for someone who is "large" and wanting to get back into the swing of things. You will not be disappointed.

edit: sorry I currently have about 60 lbs on you too.

I had one for a while and loved it, the only change I made to it was I put on some trekking bars to give me more hand positions. I still use the wheels as my mountain wheelset on my LHT. Good bike, good price.
