View Full Version : Which tubular??

I am at long last diving into the tubular world....I found an older Campy Record wheelset. Now I've got to choose a tire. These will be race-only wheels, so I am willing to spend for some good tires. I am looking for some input. I am considering the following tires; Vittoria (Cross Evo XG), Tufo (T30 Pro, Prestige), Challenge (Grifo). Anyone have experience with any of these? The T30 Pro seems a bit underwhelming, but it's a better price than the others. The Grifos seem almost too soft. I've heard good and bad about the Tufos. I'd like to get at least one season (20+ races) out of these, so durability is an issue.

Thanks for any input, I'm lost.....

I've used the Grifo clinchers, and I like them a lot. I have not had any durability issues either. The Gommitalia Magnum is a very similar tyre.

The Grifos seem like they are worth the money. I had looked at the Gommitalias, but I did not find too much info. I'm leaning toward the T30 Pro, although I'm not sure what they mean by "training tire". I would hazard a guess that they won't last as long....

Training tyre probably means that they are extra hard wearing, but not quite as nice on the course; i.e. maybe not for racing...

I'm running 32 Tufo Elites; they ride nice but don't have much knobs on the edge of the tread. But, next year, I will probably switch over the Grifos; a teammate told me the ride (who had been on Tufo's for a couple of seasons) is better.

The consensus seems to be the Grifos....I ordered some T30 pros to keep within budget, hopefully I will not regret it. In any case, I am excited to try tubulars. Thanks for the input. Once I get them glued up I will report back.

Are there any economical choices in tubulars? I would like to try them but the cost seems prohibitive at this point (I know I cheap and I'm cool with that :) )

I commute (winter bike) and race on the Vittoria Cross Evo. They are cheep. I've never tried another cross tubular so I have nothing to compare them to.

Two T30 Pros on ebay for $64. I always try to buy local, but there is not a shop in Central Oregon that stocks cross tubulars.....

Glue, wait, glue, wait, glue, mount. Note to self; Do not drink beer and mount tubulars. I finished the front, and in my haste mounted the rear backward. A lack of drinking buddies prompted a slew of comments from me to me, and after some snide remarks (again, from me, to me) I decided to leave it where it was. I've run other tires this way and been quite happy so what the hell......This is my first ride on sew-ups, I'm gonna enjoy it.

The T30 Pros feel good. I am surprised at how nice they ride. I can feel more of each little change in the the surface. When the hangover wears off I'll hit the local trails. If the snow melts, ever.
