Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Problems? Issues with the upgrade?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Question- When you go to the "Get new" feature, how can I sort the new posts by newest thread to oldest thread and newest post to oldest post?
In the old days, you could always refresh the first page of the "Get new posts" and see the newest posts and newest threads. Now, the newest posts and threads seem to be all over the place, or do I need to set my control panal so I can view the new posts and threads a certain way?

Hmm, are you sure you could do that? ;)
The get new function lists all new posts, in order of age, from your last session on the forums. I don't think you can sort that any other way.

Hey Catfish!
Good to see you back and around the forums! We had some fun in Seattle at the convention this weekend! Give me a call this week so we can discuss the matter I referred to on your messages.

The only thing I miss is the little "New" tag at the beginning of a new reply. Besides that, Great Job!

I have never used the "Get New" feature, but I see a somewhat related problem:
- If I click to "Go to first unread", it always reach the first post of the page instead of what I believe was my first unread post. In other words, there are posts that I read yesterday night and that should not appear as "new messages".
- In the same order, we used to have a "New" icon in front of new posts. It was nice to see.
- Further experimentation actually leads me to believe it's related to the timestamping problem (preference -- see below) or to the new way cookies are stored. I visited the forum and this discussion yesterday night and this morning; all posts stamped "one day ago" appear as New, even though some of them were written yesterday morning (IOW I remember having read them); but posts stamped "6 days ago" in another discussion don't appear as New.
Another bug?
When I register, the username and password appear already with some data in : "username" and " ********* ". When I typed in both data, the stars in the password were replaced one at a time, leaving me with a few extra stars at the end of my real password. I didn't notice at first, but it resulted in an error. Maybe clearing those fields would avoid a few errors.
Personal preferences.
With the old system, all posts were datestamped and timestamped. WIth the new system, recent posts are shown with notes like "10 hours ago" and "1 day ago", "2 days ago". I preferred the old system.
Besides, if a post is stamped "1 day ago", I have no idea if I read it yesterday or if it's newer than my visit.
Clearing the "New" Checkmarks
Unless I am mistaken, I notice the checkmarks are cleared by individual discussion. In other words, if I never read this discussion, it won't be cleared whereas others will be. Great feature!
But could we get an icon similar to "Mark all forums read", but in each forum; it could read "Mark all discussions of this forum read". That way, I could read the "Bike mechanics" forum one night mark it read, and not mark as read the "touring" forum.
Reputation
I agree with you that it isn't useful. Maybe it would have its place in the Bicycle Bid section ? Providing it stays there and providing there is some sense in it. Just a thought.
Thanks.
Joe, I should have been more clear. When I refresh the new posts page, the posts do not show up in order. The dates are all over the place. I'm not sure if it actually shows all new posts or if it just updates the posts I already have showing.
In the old software, when you refreshed your new posts, you saw all the new posts, as well as the new threads. Right now, I don't get the new threads. What the software does is forces me to hit "Get New" every time I want to see if a new thread or post is added in, then scroll through the screens, then scroll through all the forums to find the new threads.

Joe,
One thing that I have noticed is while in the thread it is hard to tell when the original post was posted. I would like to see a date on the post while in the thread if possible.
-Dude
Why was my post count halved? Also, I can't create a new thread. Otherwise, it looks nice.

I dunno if it's just me or a problem but I had forgotten my password and followed the instructions to get the email with the link to reset my password, but the link didn't work. So I just registered a new account...
I was wondering where the chat room feature went to? Are we going to have a chat room, or is that the end of it? I was hoping it would be around when winter sets, since that's when the chat room seemed to be the most active.

I hope to have that back. I am making some buttons for the new header right now, one of them will be Chat :)
Whoo hoooooooooo!
Will it be a new and improved chat too? Just wondering.

Same chat application, I haven't seen if they have updated the software in over a year... I'll check :)
Thanks- let us know when you've gotten a response on whether they've upgraded or not...

Yet another update problem ?
I noticed this morning that you have re-installed the old colours : much nicer.
One problem I have at home, with Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 5.5:
The windows don't load properly.
I try, for instance :
http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=158
and all I see is the Bike Forum headliner at the top and a large grey rectangle for the rest of the page. The "world" continues to turn indefinitely and the progress bar shows the page is "almost" loaded, even after 5 or 10 minutes. No difference if I reload, clear the cache, etc.
BTW, no problem with Mozilla 1.4.

Michel, does this happen on all forum pages, or just forumdisplay? Was it a problem before changing the header?
I use Windows 98 and IE 5.5 at home but I'm not having problems viewing anything.

Joe,
The new way to quote is not that easy. I just posted and it made my words in quote format and the quotes in the other format. Other than that it's working great.

Michel, does this happen on all forum pages, or just forumdisplay? Was it a problem before changing the header?
I think I had seen the problem before: an entire grey screen.
I suspect however that I had a corrupted cache or something like that, because I cleared cookies, files, etc. twice and tonight everything is OK.
However, there still is another problem with timestamping of messages. This morning, I visited all those forums that interest me, then pressed "Mark all read". Tonight, there are a few lit lightbulbs in the main page (telling me that some of the forums have new posts since this morning, I presume), but when I go in an individual forum (like this one), no tread is identified as having new messages and no individual message of a tread is identified as unread.
To make matters worst, with the new "principle" of saying how many hours ago a message was written (instead of saying that it was written on 2003-10-08 at 12:20), I have first to calculate how many hours since my last visit (11,5 hours), then look manually for messages more recent than that.

I changed the date / time back to the original look. I like the detailed time for the thread view, but can see how annoying it can get elsewhere on the board.

This morning, I was logged in.
Then I searched for "view new posts" then clicked on the "Bike Forums" logo and it told me I was not logged in. So, I logged in again on the screen. Then it told me again that I was not logged in. Tried to post, and it told me I was not logged in. Logged in again with no success.
Exited the web site and then returned and am now logged in able to post messages???
Just tried the same procedure and got logged off, unable to log on again, until I exited the web site and returned??
Tried it one more time, this time selecting "bike forums" from the menu bar. Same thing happened. Logged off and unable to log in without exiting the web site.

I noticed a quirky behavior,
When you have someone ignored everything above the ignored message shows up 1/2 width, and everything after the ignored message is normal. here is a screen shot for an example. (names have been hidden to protect the innocent/guilty.)

Thanks Jester, I'll have to ignore somebody to test this ;)
I'll get it fixed ASAP.
I dunno if this has been addressed, but I can't seem to update the "View New Posts" page with the refresh key. I have to keep clicking on the link to refresh the page. It'll sorta update itself as I press the back button as I notice that some of the little icons are different, but I can't see any new posts. I'm using Mozilla.

Chi, I believe this is due to caching the search results. The best way to continue to get new posts, is to click on the view new posts link.

I am assuming that this board no longer uses post counts?
SuperTrooper

meaning that they aren't for display unless you go to the persons profile?
When I click on tools or search, it looks like they are in the background and I can't see the items under these tools.

Searching is broken
Posting replies or new threads breaks
Forum is still slow

Last page buttons are all deadlinks, can't get to the last page of a thread. You must see some kind of decrease in visitors who are just frustrated with the new upgrade. Why fix something that wasn't broken?
