Please let me know if you have any problems with the new software. If you have any requests for design / layout changes, please let me know. I will be updating the style for the next week or so.

Thanks!

It looks good. I'm glad you are back up and running. I thought I would have to go cold turkey on bicycle topics for the winter.

All I get in Netscape is a blank screen. Works just fine in IE. Good work on the new BF!!

Joe Gardner
10-05-03, 07:50 AM
Thanks Hunter, do you know what version of Netscape you are using?

I have tested the layout in IE 5.5 and 6.0 as well as the latest versions of Opera and Mozilla.

Hunter

Yeah I use the old antiquated 4.76 it may be this puter and "Javascrpit" I get this alot.

Ahh... I don't think I'll be trying to make it compatible with the 4.x versions, sorry.

Its cool as long as I can get here some way or another.

Easy way to do it is to edit your hosts file (assuming you use Windows, of course). Just add the following line:

64.191.20.129 www.bikeforums.net #temporary redirect to BikeForums

...and that'll do it.

Joe Gardner

Grendel, good tip on the hosts file. I believe the problem is with Hunter's obsolete version of Netscape.

One thing I liked very much on other bicycle forums was the fact that you could bring up the latest posts regardless of catagory..will you be having that or did i just miss It?

Joe Gardner

Click on the "Get New" button under the logo.

I will be changing the logo / header to the old style. The current style is a purchased template. I just didnt feel like coding 182 templates tonight :)

Joe, I am not getting the Google ads ( I used them when interested) and when I went in to put on an avatar the images were not able to be displayed. Other than that looks good. Now the question is do you go to sleep or for a ride?

Joe Gardner
10-05-03, 09:17 AM
George, I have not yet put the ads up, I will soon. I have a few dozen templates that need to be changed to get the look I want. You will also need to upload a custom avatar. I have lost the stan dard avatars. But will try to restore them in the near future.

I think i'll go on a quick bike ride, I hate sleeping in the day time... :)

Joe, new forum looks good. I have one recommendation: I thought the “Mark All Forums Read” option located on the “Search Results” page (Get New option) was a great feature. Currently, it appears we must return to the "Home" page to use this option.

Like the new format! Now, how do I go about editing my title and reputation.... I'd like to upgrade my reputation. Thanks!

Joe, what is this “reputation” thing is all about? Is it suppose to turn colors, numbers or what?

Any chance of gett ing the "start date" of the thread listed in the column with the name of the thread starter?

I would appreciate this, as sometimes you have to do a bit of searching to see if this is a revival of an old thread that has already died at least once.

Is there a way to mark all post read as before?

Thanks for the work and thanks for the update.

I use Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows 98. I have one "functional" problem and a few cosmetic ones.

Functional Problem

When I opened the "Bikeforums.net" page, I was welcomed as a guest and had no option to log in -- only the option to register. It's only when I wanted to post a reply that I could log in.
I liked the idea of being able to log in at the start, so I could use my own preferences (# of posts per page, time zone for example)

Cosmetic problem

There was a slight problem with the previous interface, but it is more accute with this one: many backgrounds are too dark for many screens. For instance, when I write this message, the background is such that I have a hard time to read my text here; I can only read it on my laptop screen which is generally too white for good-looking photos.

The worst offender is the dark blue bar into which the subject is written: impossible to read until I select the content.

What are the guidelines for images in signatures? I can't seem to make it work.

There's a slight problem when editing a post for the 2nd or 3rd time where earlier edits don't seem to stick. I'll try clearing my cookies to see if that helps.

I miss the 'user location' in the user profile that is shown to the left of the post. It's nice to know where people are responding from.

Joe,

I don't see private forums, moderators forum, trash, industry etc.
Are they running or not restored yet?
Good job getting BF back up and running.

Yes, please explain "reputation."

On the left side of the thread below your 'thread count' there is a human figure icon which you can click on and 'rate your approval or dis-approval and add comments about a persons thread or post.

Really like being able to read the initial post in a thread by moving my cursor over it and not having to open it. That's a cool perk

Joe -
Any way to get the "login" back at the top of the page, and not just on the main page? Also, I can't get it to remember my password, even when "remember ... " is checked off.

I do not have a "log in" option. I had to try and send Joe an email and then it gave me the option to log in.

The set up is different but it looks better and I like how there are more options for viewing threads.

Unfortunatly I can not use the beer smiles :D

I am not seeing the shop section, is it not up yet?

Joe Gardner
10-05-03, 07:43 PM
No, it is not up yet. Sadly, the industry related forum was lost in the corruption.

I have a list of all members who had access, I'll get that one up ASAP. (within 24 hours).

I've noticed a problem with the "Get New" at the top of the forum..

For example when I hit get new earlier I got response..

http://64.191.20.129/search.php?searchid=550

So in essense should show me all posts newere then that point on, but does not I did not realize it at first, I figured most did not realize it was backup.. but if I hit get new again it does update.. so the function

http://64.191.20.129/search.php?do=getnew&&action=getnew

Does seem to work, and I get a new search from point.. and I get a current up to date listing of new threads. If you click on the first search id from 550 then the 1004 should make sense.
http://64.191.20.129/search.php?searchid=1004

I hope I made sense.. :)

Joe Gardner
10-06-03, 03:20 AM
Yup, that makes sense, sounds like a caching issue. Is anyone else having this problem when clicking on the Get New button? i.e. showing a search ID of under 1000.

Kev, do you see any of the google ads on the forum? Or is my coding working correct and only showing the ads to non-donating memers? ;)

DnvrFox
10-06-03, 05:51 AM
The notice of a private email gives the address of the old web site. It does automatically forward, but did not connect directly. I got the main page, and then clicked on the "1 message" icon.

Darn. Since D'Alex is no longer with us, I was seriously considering trying for the "worst" reputation. :D

I don't see any google ads, that seems to work.

I just checked the get new again, on a different computer just wanted to make sure it was not my one pc :)

If you do the 1004 the most current post you will see is from ostas over 7 hours ago.. but below there are newer posts and on the right side it shows how long since the last response and it will show 1 hour most of them are less then actualy 7 hours. So that part is updating properly, just not the list itself.

Gus, I have added that to my to-do list. I'll move that to the top of the forums, as well as the login and logout options.

There's a lot of white space on posts by members w/o sigs. Canthe post window size itself to fit the text? Less scrolling to read the convo!

bikeman
10-06-03, 05:44 PM
I noticed the extra lines of white space on all posts even when there is only one line of text too. All seems to work well on my end. Gosh I miss the "Swoosh" on the header graphic. It's on all of the jerseys from last year.

BTW I'm on a Mac running OSX (10.2.8) using Safari 1.0 (v85.5) as my browser. Also seems to work well on IE 5.0 for Mac OSX.

Good job overall. I missed not having BF to go to for a few days. Nice to have it back.

Thanks Joe.
