Bicycle Mechanics - Got bicycle repair job yesterday

Yes I got a bicycle to fix yesterday..put a new shaft In the rear wheel..new bearings.I just gave the shaft a hit with the hammer cause It was bent and the shaft broke In two..I've done this many times and usually a couple hits with the hammer and they straighten out nice..but this one busted in two,tells me It was going to go anyway lucky the guy never had a problem when He was cycling? :eek:

Well this mtn. bike was your average dept. store bike?
You can sometimes repair a SLIGHTLY bent axle by clamping its unthreaded center section in a vise, placing a sleeve over the threaded end, and applying a bit of leveraged torque to it. However, many steel axles will break if cold-worked twice (bent, then straightened).
Rear wheels with 6- or 7-speed freewheels (as opposed to modern freehubs) are somewhat prone to axle breakage or bending at the right side bearing cone.
Well this mtn. bike was your average dept. store bike?
