I rode down to Santa Cruz yesterday. Then came back and played an hour of tennis. No riding today 'cause I played 4 hours of tennis.

Love that sunshine!

Did Alpine Dam today and the weather was incredible. It was absolutely great to see the dam again, the last time I was there was in 1975. Those rollers on the Bolinas Ridge brought back old memories too.

And there were sooo many lady cyclists at the Dam.

The title of this thread should be "If you didn't ride this weekend... Why?"

Good lordy it couldn't be a more perfect weekend. My best friend (who lives in Monterey) finally bought a road bike and came up. His inaugural ride was a brisk 40 mile outing yesterday morning. I had so much fun I did the exact route again today (jusssst a litttttle bit faster  ) and just walked in the door. Man! Lots of cyclists out this weekend. Loving it!!!
P.S. Beer never tastes as good as it does RIGHT NOW!!!

I rode the fixed gear bike 46 miles yesterday. Took it up Moody road and it's 11% grade and had to stop twice to catch my breath. Later on over at Alpine and Portola there was some sort of group ride going on. Their shirts read no kain no gain. I rode with them and then went up OLH which was extremely draining. It took about everything I had to get to HW 35 without toppling over sideways. Hopefully when the bullhorn bars arrive I'll be able to get better leverage out of the saddle. I spun my guts out back down it and headed for home. I could hear OLH laughing and pointing at me as I rode away.

After the gross injustice and level 8 sufferage of yesterday I would have my revenge on those pile of crap hills today. I cleaned up the carbon bike first since it had mud everywhere from an evening ride then set out to lay waste to anything with an incline to it. Awesome weather, first sunscreen of the season on the arms and legs. No wind on Foothill at all so I made good time getting over to the first battle. I showed Moody who the damn boss is but being careful to not toss all my cookies too early. Riding over to Alpine I looked at the sign for Golden Oak but thought no, that street would wear me out when I still had to open up the large can of whoop@ss on OLH. I drafted behind two ladies in Palo Alto bike shop jerseys over to OLH then went to work ripping the road apart piece by piece. The perfect amount of cool breeze in the air as I made my way up the twists and turns. A day ago the hill was laughing and mocking me but today it hid in the corner and sulked as I droped hamers with each pedal stroke to 35. I downed an energy bar and some gel and went to work on Skyline. Tons of motorcycles out and about, some courteous, others not. Fortunately they were all headed northbound out of my direction. With fatigue setting in I payed more attention to pacing myself and watching the HR monitor on the rollers until reaching Page Mil. On the descent there was someone on a three wheeled recumbent. This person was going so fast down hill I could barely keep him in sight. I saw him descend Moody then he vanished. I figured I would give Moody another going so I descended then came back up. This time in lowest gear, spinning away happily at 34-29. Major kudos to the rider climbing without clipless or even toe clips. On the way home along Foothill I was trying to keep up with a very large, strong rider on his full suspension Mountain Bike. He was off at a relentless pace of 20-22mph mashing a high gear. I was able to stay with him just barely until a red light. 49.5 miles today, payback!

I was in Napa, riding in the Cherry Pie Crit. I didn't bring home pie. :( However, one my teammates did. His kids are ecstatic.

And the weather is awesome! :D

It was a beautiful day today for a ride.

I went for a 41 mile loop that included Los Vaqueros Reservoir. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky and the temps was perfect.

No riding this weekend. We headed to Bear Valley with a bunch of Scouts. The weather was fantastic and so was the snow. I personally didn't ski but had a 4 hour hike with my snowshoes including climbing a black diamond to the top of the mountain.

No riding for me this weekend either. Mrs. Ridin had me do some serious chores yesterday around the house and the kidz kept me busy at Kirkwood today.

i managed to crack my frame and damage my bottom bracket spindle, and had to ferry back to SF, but what a nice day to have that happen!

Morbid curiosity here: Details?

The details are murky, even to me. Right before we crossed the GG bridge, I noticed some weird flex in the back end of my bike. Nothing out of the ordinary had occurrred, it just started up all of a sudden.. Stopped in at Mike's Bikes in Sausalito and the mechanic and I finally narrowed it down to a tiny crack in the left seatstay. No idea how that happened. Unfortunately it's a 2nd hand frame, so it's not under warranty or anything. Very very strange.

Against my better judgement, I agreed to continue the ride up to Tiburon with my friends, then ferry back. Of course, a few miles later my left crank starts going VERY loose - possibly due to the flex from the crack? Anyway, I rode the remaining miles with my left crankarm swinging wildly forward and back, leading to a nicely rounded-off square taper when all was said and done. I'll have to get a new spindle at the very least.

*But* it was a truly beautiful day and I learned how to get to Tiburon (albeit very slowly).

.

I wonder if the previous owner had crashed it? At least you didn't get stuck out in the middle of nowhere. I had a rear derailler crack and fall of my trek once after a 100 mile ride in the wilderness, so I got lucky!

I had lots of kids stuff this past weekend. Basketball, birthday party, crab feed at the school, etc...
Sunday afternoon my daughters schoolmate and his dad were going to ride around our local track to train for a kids triathlon. His dad invited us to join them so we ended up riding around the track.

Interesting, that was my exact mileage too. Yep, I slightly bonked on Ridgecrest because I didn't take any food and had just a small bowl of cereal before I left. Also have to take two more bottles of water or refill in Fairfax.

Rode a loop around San Bruno Mtn Friday on a rare lunch ride from work, then got out in the east bay Sunday - when I had a noob-clipless fall (detailed on the road forum...) and bent my rear derailleur hanger. I'm all fixed up now and will have an improved riding experience at the end of the week.

Gotta comment on the couch photo -- I've often wondered about those kind individuals who randomly leave furniture around our east bay countryside. Previously I've assumed they were cheapskates and scoundrels who couldn't be *&^'ed to dispose of used goods properly, but I now see it for the humanitarian gesture to cyclists that it really is. Why, some people even try to leave a TV out if you're missing your favorite show. How thoughtful.

I''ve gotten in 4 rides in the last week, almost the first ones this year.

Last year, I had ONE flat in 3500 miles. This year so far, I have had THREE, in less than 100 miles! Two of them happened simultaneously on Sunday - I hit God's Own Pothole on Crystal Springs just west of the Alameda. WHAM!! Both my bottles popped out of the cages, the rear tire flatted immediately. The front waited until I had fixed the rear. Since I was only 2 miles from home, I called my wife to come pick me up, went home and started out on a different bike. It's nice to have a spare!

BTW, watch out for that hole if you ride on Crystal Springs. It's hard to see, because during peak afternoon riding hours, it is in a shady patch.

I had my first double flat encounter a couple of months ago, on a Santa Cruz century ride. Same thing, hit a whopping pothole on Hwy1. Both tires flatted. Ended up SAG-ing home with my tail between my legs :(.

I've noticed the last couple of times going down the front of Mt Tam , just past Pan Toll you have to be really careful. Theres a mile section that's just trashed. I thought I broke my wrist on one of those chuck holes the other Saturday. It's the same deal, in a real shady area so they're hard to spot.

It's between The Alameda and El Cerrito Ave, as you're heading West towards Hillsborough, shortly after the end of the recently repaved section. You know, right where you reach about 25+ mph coasting down to the stop sign just past the little bridge? That's why it's so dangerous (especially to me, because I seem to be drawn to potholes like a moth to a flame....).
