So after Psimet fixed up my old crossbike, I'm looking to get my 13-year old son to join me in some very "beginner" type mtn bike trails. He has yet to discover biking can be fun, and gets bored pretty quickly on paved trails. Right now I just bribe him with a "food" destination to get him to ride, and even that doesn't always work. But riding for fun, what a concept! Any suggestions within riding distance of St. Charles? I'd rather not have to drive somewhere if it can be avoided.

For non-boring your are looking at Palos Forest Preserve, Kettle Moraine or Rock Cut St Park. - TF

the trails at palos are pretty hardcore, at least to me (read as a dude with no mtb handling skills).

Palos has a lot of fun and novice easy single track trails, let me know when you want to go out and get a nice one day tour.

Not enjoying biking at thirteen years of age? That's too bad. I guess the younger generation has other priorities these days. I was riding all over the place when I was that old (or it seemed like I was going all over the place to my little muscles back then). Of course, I ditched the bike completely for five years after I turned sixteen.

Is there enough support for a BFNIC off road bike ride? My son (14) is looking to get into it more this season too since I rebuilt my Schwinn Homegrown for him.

Edit: I've never been to Palos. Where is it and how does it compare to Rockcut or Kettle?

Palos is more technical than Kettle, but not nearly as brutal. Palos is more like fun, relatively easy single track with a few seconds of terror every once in a while. It also is not nearly as civilized as Kettle; not one-way, poorly marked and broken bottles can find their way onto the trails. I prefer Palos. - TF

Palos has come a long way with Cambr taking care of the trails with the help of the FPD. Maybe a off road fun ride in the spring to get the kids into biking would be fun.
