Utility Cycling - Does anyone have availability info for SRAM Spectro 7 hubs?

Crosspost from Commuting and Bicycle Mechanics forums:

Hello,

I'm building a rear wheel for my Schwinn Twinn tandem. I researched several internally geared hubs and decided on the SRAM Spectro 7 with drum brake. After much searching, I found a few websites that listed them, but all have told me they were not in stock. The company I placed my order with told me they were waiting for QBP to get them from SRAM, the 2008 shipment of them has not left Germany.

Does anyone know if this is the case? Any tips on an LBS somewhere that might have one of these lying around?

Spectro 7 hubs are not rated for tandem or cargo bike use. Here is the hub manual (http://www.sram24.com/newtechdoc/english/consumers/ghs/pdf/spectro/Ins_Spectro_S7_2_2002.pdf) - have a look at the top of page 12.

Thanks for the info, but I didn't ask about the rating of the hub, simply if anyone knew how I could find one.

Sorry - figured you might not be aware as you mentioned it was for a tandem and it would suck to order a hub that did not work for your application.

If you want to buy the hub and can't find one contact SRAM and ask who has stock in your corner of the world:

These guys (http://www.ebikestop.com/Items/004-hu2542?) are pretty good with stock, but ship slowly.

If you're ok with Sturmey Archer, biketoolsetc. (http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cgi?id=854540192262&d=single&c=Components&sc=Hubs&tc=Sturmey-Archer&item_id=SU-XRD8) has an 8-speed with drum brake, and it also comes with a shifter, cables, etc.

Thanks! I spoke with the guy that I had placed the SRAM order with, and we took a different tack: I'm now getting the Shimano Nexus Inter-8 Premium with roller brake. He gave it to me for the same price, and it will be here Friday. I love a wheel building weekend!

If I hadn't gone the way I did, I would probably have gone with your first suggestion at ebikestop. I hadn't found that link in all my searching before I ordered.
