Very Long. See summary at the bottom.
Saturday: TTT and ITT
I just finished building up my new TT bike on Wednesday, so I only had 2 days to dial in my position. Saturday was the first real test.
Our A's team time trial consisted of me, another climber, and two time trial animals. My goal for the day was to take a few quality pulls and hang on for dear life. The course was a rolling 22.5K, with about 350 feet of climbing on the way out. I spent most of the way out taking 20 second pulls at 330-350 watts. I felt fine until a large roller about 2K from the turn around.
I ended a pull right at the base of a small hill and just died. I was ready to fall off the back until I saw that my teammate had popped off about 20 seconds earlier. That left the two TT animals and myself with 12K to go. It took about 5 minutes of suffering and skipping pulls before I could make myself useful again. I contributed some shorter pulls on the way back and we ended up with a respectable time of 30:35. That was good enough for 3rd, a minute back from Stanford and 30 seconds back from Cal.
After resting for a few hours, it was time for the ITT. Hopped on the trainer and the legs felt like bags of cement….not a good sign. On this course I usually try for 285 watts until I hit the hill, power up the hill at about 350 watts, recover a little until the turn around, then kill it at about 290-295 watts the whole way back. That’s what I would have liked to have done. What I didn’t realize was how little power I can actually produce in my new, far more aggressive TT position. The combination of the new position, racing twice, and being slightly sick meant I only managed 256 watts for the race.
That being said, I crossed the line at 32:54. That was over 2 minutes fast than my previous best from last year! I ended up 2nd in the B’s behind my teammate Alex. I guess my TT position is pretty aggressive, but very aero.
Sunday: Road Race
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x220/esammuli/UCLAProfile.jpg
The UCLA road race is the hardest collegiate road race of the year. It’s a 13 mile loop with 1500 feet of climbing per lap. It’s a modified, harder version of Devil’s Punchbowl. We did 4 laps. About 25 riders showed up for the B’s, a disappointing turnout compared to last year.
Having just gone one/two the previous day Alex and I were marked men in the peloton. We took the two laps fairly easy, but still managed to whittle the field down to 13. The 3rd time we hit the hill UC Irvine, Cal, Alex and I hit the front and drilled it. The remainder of the field exploded and we were down to 6. Stanford and CPSLO dropped off on the climb but clawed there way back after the decent.
On the last time up the hill we drilled it again from the bottom and made the final selection. Alex ended up 50 yards up the road with Irvine chasing and myself sucking his wheel doing zero work. We caught Alex with about a mile of climbing left. Any time Irvine would go to the front one of us would attack and force him to drag us back. Unfortunately I got burned and started to loose contact but dragged myself back on. We worked together down the decent and the false flat at the bottom. About 2 miles from the finish Irvine took a pull and Alex attacked. Irvine decided he wasn’t going to catch him by himself so he gave up the chase. I was pretty much toast at that point and when we got to the hill Irvine rode me off his wheel pretty easily and I cruised in for 3rd. Stanford came in solo over a minute behind.
Summary:
TTT: Hung on for dear life, 3rd place in the A’s.
ITT: New TT bike, no power, still got 2nd.
Road Race: Hard race, 3 man breakaway, teammate won, I got 3rd.
Next race: Pine Flat

wow my PT says i averaged 319W over the ITT course but my time was about 2min slower than yours. i had no TT equipment at all, could the differences in times really be due to this? i need to get some aerobars.
Do they teach spelling at UCLA? Just kidding, I only reviewed your summary, but sounds like you and your squad did a great job. Congrats on successful racing.

My FTP is around 293 watts right now, so if I didn't have the TT bike I probably would have averaged closer to 300 watts. I'm 5 foot 9 inch and 143lbs so I punch a pretty small hole in the wind.
What is the difference between the UCLA road race and the regular Punchbowl?

Devil's Punchbowl (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/littlerock/482664673)
UCLA Road Race (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/pearblossom/628918582)
UCLA RR turns right onto Longview Road and finishes Just before Pallet Creek Road. Longview is short but steeper.

The B's also do 4 laps whereas the 3's and 4's only do 3 laps. It's almost the exact same distance, but with 1500ft more climbing.
Devil's Punchbowl (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2618202) was my first cat 5 race last year. At the sharp turn off Fort Tejon to Pallet Creek, several people in the masters race right behind me went flying off the road...

95 degrees? Man that sucks.
I was in that race, it was retardedly hot. Apparently it's always retardedly hot when they decided to have the race.
I remember there was some big black dude that attacked right away. I saw him pull out right after the first lap...

That's what I figured. Fort Tejon has that little grinder after Longview that wears on you on the 4th and 5th laps. Pallet Creek gets hard the 4th and 5th times too because you're riding into the wind. I have wondered many times why the Punchbowl course doesn't just go right on Longview. It would cut down on at least one cop they have to pay for intersection patrol.

That happens in the Pro/1-2 race as well. You have some speed going down into that turn, it seems like it is a little more than 95 degrees, I think Pallet Creek is narrower than Fort Tejon and there always seems to be gravel there. It takes guys a coule of laps before they seem to get it right.

I went through 11 or 12 bottles in 5 laps there last year.

yea, the juniors did 2 laps, i went through 4 bottles and ran out. There were people in the other categories that i saw who were stopping at their cars at the end of the first lap to fill bottles. No way you could finish without someone in feed.

I was thinking of doing this race...according to last year's race flier (if it's the same this year) I wouldn't start until 12:36.:eek::eek: I melt in the heat. :(
Great work! Way to use the 2 to 1 advantage in the RR break to get your team the win.
Thanks for the write up.

man, i wish we had rr's with that kind of gnarly profile here in NC.

Thanks, I'm very pleased with how the race worked out tactically. Thats what really sets collegiate apart from normal racing. There's teamwork even at the lowest levels. Nobody really cares who wins as long as they're on your team.

whew you guys start early. First collegiate for us is New Mexico on march 1.
By the way, as you probably know CSU is hosting collegiate nationals this year. I live literally 2 minutes (by bike) from the start of the road race, in western Fort Collins. I'm totally open to having a team or two stay in my house. We have a full basement w/futon, lots of floor space upstairs and downstairs, and I live with 2 other cyclists. I may even give up my room with big comfy bed and sleep at the girls house :) Depends on whether or not I'll be doing the RR.
Anyone planning on being at Nats, let me know how many you are bringing and I'll see what I can work out. If you can't fit at my place, I can probably find another house for you.

gnarly?, i dont believe the incline percent went over 10%, it was a lot of climbing but spread out over 13 miles, definately not what i would consider 'gnarly' being from cali, but i dunno what the hills are like in NC.

Great job. I read some of the ride reports of the few (4) aggies that made the trip down and it sounded like a pretty good race. Maybe I'll see you around if I (Staff member not qualified to race) volunteer to help the kids (some my age and some older/younger but I like to call them kids as they're still students) at a race. Will probably be at conference to watch as the fiance has family up in Reno.

I just read Paul's race report. That guy is far and away the most talented rider I've ever met. Plus he's the only Cat 2 I've seen without shaved legs.

The UCLA course is one of the hardest races on the schedule for the A's and B's. It might not be 'gnarly', but the climb really starts to get to you on the 3rd and 4th lap. I was definitely feeling cooked on lap 4.
I'd say Santa Cruz is the hardest race overall. It's a 2.6 miles with 360 feet of climbing per lap and kicks up to about 10% at the top. It's 9, 13, or 17 laps depending on your category. Climb 5 minutes, descend 2 minute, repeat.

The UCLA road race didnt seem much worse than Boulevard, although i must say i had to race C's and so was probably doing half the laps you guys were. I've heard that the Berkeley road race has some pretty bad climbs, and i finally got upgraded to B's, so the road races start to have some real mileage, no more of these crap 20 mile rr's with not even enough time to get warmed up.

Congrats on the upgrade.
The McEwen climb at Berkeley is definitely tough. The road is very narrow and very steep at the bottom so you need to been near the front. Otherwise you get bogged down behind a bottleneck.

Im leading right now in C's omnium, but now that im a B do those points somehow transfer over, or do i have to start with zero again?

You start over from zero. For the record, I'm not a big fan of the B and C omniums. I think they create incentive for the best riders in a category to not move up. If you're consistently doing well in a category then you should upgrade. Winning the C's omnium is like being the tallest midget. Props to you for upgrading.

Yeah, this is one of the few races that hates on the lower level CATs by giving them a noon time start time. Maybe this year it'll be decent weather and the CAT 1,2s will have to race in 40 degree temps.
