4/5 Starts at 8:00
People all around Mike are having a hard time clipping in
Start down the bumpy road, going 28 mph from the start, Mike thinks that this is too fast
Hit the "bumpy" section, water bottles are flying from bikes like popcorn popping
People are dropping chains and flatting, wheel truck is no where to be found
A mile from the turn Mike gets dropped from the pack, what a "flunkie"
Group disappears and apparently slows down to 18-22 mph the rest of the ride
Mike jumps with a group of four and starts hammering to catch up
Mike pulls off
Mike throws up
Mike gets back on back and the race for last place begins!!
Mike holds off the last place rider for the next 15 miles

Mike should stop referring to himself in the third person.

Did Mike eat something before the race?

Mike did warm up and Mike did eat before the race, the problem is that Mike has a 3 week old son at home who does not let dad ride.

If I could of hung on for 1 more mile I know I could of stayed with the back the rest of the race. It seems like I blow up and once I recover I am stronger than before I blew up, if that makes any sense.

But no it doesn't make sense

In that case it sounds mental.

If you can push through your mental block your body has more to give.

If you feel like this you need to more warm up. Ride at threshold for 5 minutes after 10 minutes of warm up. then ride at endurance pace for a bit. Try to time ending this as close as possible to the race start while still giving yourself time for a final restroom stop and time to get a decent position at the line.

Mike has a 3 week old.
Mike probably hasnt slept in 3 weeks.
Mike shouldnt underestimate the power of rest.
Mike should be happy Mike got to go out and race his bike.
When MDcatV's daughter was 3 weeks old, MDcatV had no idea if MDcatV would ever sleep again.
MDcatV would have been too hazardous to race MDcatV's bike.
MDcatV's wife would have killed MDcatV if MDcatV would have mentioned racing his bike 3 weeks after MDcatV's daughter was born.

Enjoy your 3 week old, congratulations, it's a long season and there will be plenty of races for you to do better in.

Ouch. Yeah, give it time and get some of your sleep back. The birth of our third child triggered my comeback 2 years ago. I suddenly realized that there was NO WAY I could ride outside of lunchtime. So I stopped playing Battlefield2 at lunch on M/W/F, and rode every day at lunch, with focus.

Exactly.

Yep, I only started riding regularly again when my youngest hit 1.5, and then my "regular" ride turned into my commute. Come to think of it, 3 weeks in I was hallucinating from lack of sleep. Are you sure you were really at a race and Mike puking wasn't the little one decorating your shirt?

I didn't do the Road Race, but you should have done the crit at Castroville.

By the way.... Was the sketch guy in Brown and Blue Argyle there on Sunday? I only raced Saturday...

Mike,

3 week olds aren't to blame for ANYTHING.

You'll find plenty of legitimate things to blame him for when he gets older and actually deserves to be blamed for stuff.

Meanwhile, take your lumps like a man. The season's early. Keep on keepin' on. Won't be long before you'll be a Cat. 3 laughing at some poor Cat. 5 upchucking in a ditch.

And....for what it's worth....I concur with the 'didn't warm up properly' assessments above based on the facts as you relate them.

Congrats on the new kid! When my kids were 3 wks old I wasn't even thinking about racing. Be happy to race when you can this year and enjoy it no matter how you place.
