So the dog (100# German Shepherd, that is) starts barking and runs upstairs. I figure I ought to see what he's barking at, so I go up to the front door and sure enough, there's someone out there. I hadn't heard the doorbell ring because there's no repeater downstaris.
Anyway, there's this guy from ADT who drove by, saw the sign that the house was alarmed and apparently did a check for monitoring (we don't have it) and decided to stop by to pitch the ADT security system.
With my dog on an alert sit right next to me. He didn't get very far.... :D

My alarm system is a German Shepherd too. Works as a house alarm, a car alarm, and will take a bite outta crime if needed.:D I used to joke about putting up a sign that says" Dog is just here to hold you still while I aim", but it would probably be used against me in court if it ever came to that.

You sure it wasn't a con?
Like in Home Alone, when Joe Pesci poses as a police man to get a look inside the McAlaster's (spelling?) home before trying to rob it.
Well, if it was, I don't think they'll be back!

Yep...I have to say that the dogs here are as good as it gets when it comes to alerting me to things going on outside.
Our Min Pin is on constant patrol and we have a killer Shih Tzu for back up.
If the perps get past them then they have to deal with the ninja cats.
Good dog! This reminds me of a story I read a few years ago. A woman came home from work to find her mail behind the door on the floor - and one brochure had been torn to pieces by the dog. Since she was curious, she put the pieces back together to see what it was about.
It was a brochure from an alarm company, saying, "Remember, a thief can get as easily into your home as this brochure" ...:D

We've got a 72 pound Ridgeback/Boxer mix security system.
The barking is a first defense level system.
The slobber, growling and raised hackels are the warning for anyone who ignores the barking.
Final defense is biological warfare: She'll break wind and kill everybody in the room.

Yeah....I have 2 Lhasa Apsos - historically speaking, Lhasas were bred to be indoor sentry dogs in the monasteries in Tibet way back in the day. My boy Lhasa is alert to ANYTHING outside (and inside) the house. My little girl resigned guard dog duties to my boy, so she'll be the backup barker from time to time, but he does the bulk of checking everything out, barking his head off and doing his "rounds".
my alarm system is a 75lb lab mix. (plus beagle:rolleyes:) We used to have a shepherd mix, but she is no longer with us.

I was giving thought to a doorbell/alarm/theft detterant, and I began to think about how some robbers will ring your doorbell and then either shoot you or just knock you out and then rob your house. Well, I came up with idea of putting a small speaker over the overhang to the front door, rigged so that after 10 seconds or so, the ominous sound of a 12 gauge being pumped would emanate from said speaker. Having the speaker above the doorbell-ringer would provide an omni-directional sound, leaving the perpetrator clueless as to the whereabouts of said shot gun. Still need to get a few things from DigiKey before I put my plan into action. Of course, this would go well with the sign in the window next to the front door that has a picture of a German Shepard on it and the message "I can make it to the gate in six seconds flat. Can you?"
This reminds of a story that my dad tells. When my dad lived in Texas, his neighbor's house had been broken into a few times. Well, my dad needed something from him so he walks over and in the yard, there was a new sign. It read "This house guarded six (6) nights a week by an irate homeowner with a shotgun. You guess which six"
