Another one.

Oregonian Story (http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/02/cyclist_killed_by_trimet_bus_i.html) (just in case they update the story).

A bicyclist was killed in a crash involving a TriMet bus this afternoon in Beaverton, authorities said tonight.

The fatal collision happened about 4:45 p.m. on Farmington Road, as the westbound bus was making a stop just west of Murray Blvd, police and TriMet officials said. While police investigate, about four blocks of westbound Farmington Road from 142nd Avenue remain closed.

Few details have emerged from the scene. Sgt. Paul Wandell, a Beaverton Police spokesman, said it is unclear whether the bus hit the cyclist, who was described as a "young adult male."

There is a bike lane on Farmington Road, but it remains unclear if the cyclist was using the lane at the time of the collision, Wandell said.

The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene, he said.

The bus driver was 53-year-old woman who lives in Hillsboro and has 26 years of experience with TriMet, the transit agency said.

My wife told me about that; she was stuck in traffic on Murray when this happened. Turns out the kid was a former student at her middle school. It's tragic but hopefully they figure out what happened here so it can possibly be prevented from happening again.

I hear the intersection is one of the worst designs in Washington County for biking.

ZOW-EE It seems like there are so many bike fatalities in the Portland area. Are the drivers that bad?????

VR Kelley:
I do not know the area where the accident occured, however we have a lot of bikes on the roads in Portland, and some of the designs are, well works in progress. Especially the bike lanes on busy streets can be problematic. Something to keep in mind is that t 45MPH the fatality rate for pedestriand (and I am assuming bikers) in MVA is 90% (as opposed to 5% at 20MPH), so if your biking on a major road where the traffic is going 45MPH, pretty much every MVA bike accident will be at least very serious if not fatal.

I try and avoid roads where the traffic speeds are high, but out in the burbs that is pretty much every through street. When I bike in Gresham (Eastside suburb and roughly analougus to Beaverton) I have to take some major streets, and it is scary. Also the bike lanes are crossed by busses going to pull outs, and I have had busses come up behind me and pull over into the bike lanes while honking their horn- leaving me to wonder where I am supposed to go? Not that it happened in this case, the investigation is still pending- I have heard a lot of theories as to the cause, but none from reliable sources.

There is some discussion of the design of that intersection on bikeportland.org, you could go there to get a better picture.

Drivers in portland are (in general) less agro than Seattle drivers, because we have less traffic. But there are hmm "special" people everywhere, so good to be careful.
