Foo - How you know your town is moving upscale

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You see a $250K+ Maybach sedan parked in front of Shop Rite. This is in Chester NY. We're used to Ford pickup trucks and the occasional Volvo.

Can you (or someone else) translate this?
Dollar tree= Dollar store.
Park= to place or leave (a vehicle) in a certain place for a period of time.
SSF= South San Francisco, California, United States of America, Zip Code 94080
Mercedes= Car manufacturer
BMW= German Car manufacturer

One of your local yokels probably slipped and fell, probably at that Shoprite no less, and won a $350,000 lawsuit.

QFC (the local Kroger owned grocery chain) by my apartment always has very expensive sports cars and luxury sedans (6 figure price tags) in the lot. I roll up in my dirty, 4-digit price tag, banged up Jeep and park it right next to them and nobody seems to care one way or the other. Just because somebody drives an expensive car doesn't mean that they're shopping for foie gras at some ritzy market all the time. Rich people like Cap'n Crunch, too.
The only instance I thought something was seriously amiss was back in Cincinnati. A guy at Kroger's was dressed to the nines in a very nice suit and overcoat, he was purchasing a lot of expensive steaks and other pricey items, pays with food stamps, and wheels his cart out to his brand new Cadillac STS.

A friend of mine has a Porsche Carrera GT ($450k), and he's a "regular" guy like anyone else. Well...minus the fact he's obsessed with organic foods. Just has a few extra bucks and actually appreciates what he owns, rather than buying stuff to impress others. Has over 30k miles on the CGT as well....not a garage queen.

The escorts have more teeth
When the area goes upscale, they're escorts, not hookers.
That Maybach is an unbelievably ugly car!
It may be the pinnacle of luxury, but it looks like it's deformed, somehow!

Maybe in your area. In my area, hookers are the upper class. We haven't moved on to escorts yet.

No no. In my area it's not escorts. It's bored, rich housewives trying to pick up guys at the grocery store... Nothin' says "classy" like a bad pick up line and a grocery cart full of Wheat Thins and Arbor Mist.

When the students start driving convertible Mercedes and Bimmers to the High School.
heh. that was my high school.
i remember one of my classmates storming into the office because she was on her way to lunch, but her car was missing when she went out to the lot.
she had a 2-year-old SAAB, and there was a brand new BMW convertible parked where her SAAB had been.
she came out of the office with the keys to her new Beemer. it was her 17th birthday, and her parents had come by the school while she was in class and "stole" her car, replacing it with her birthday present.
another of my classmates parents finally took his keys away after the second time he was pulled over driving his convertible Porsche with a suspended license.
i think myself, my best friend, and my girlfriend were the only folks who drove who didn't have new or near-new luxury/exotic cars. well, and there were some kids who drove classics - vintage Corvettes, etc. one guy had a Hemi Dart. and the class stoner drove a jet-black Caprice convertible.
3000GT twin turbos, BMWs, Benzes, one kid even had an NSX (i graduated HS in 1992, so you can imagine how big a deal that was then)... saw all of them in our school lot.
fwiw, i drove a 1976 Peugeot 504 Diesel until the heater core blew and i replaced it with a clapped-out MGB roadster. i bought both cars with my own money, earned working as a wrench at local bike shops.
nope, i didn't fit in at all back then.

Jeez...where I went to highschool there wasn't parking for students and I doubt the students who had working vehicals even hit 15. One kid had a Ninja, I thought that was cool....
I guess if you guys know rich by your method, I must have come from a very poor school...yep, I did. They still walk to school hahaha
