Southern California - What kind of cyclist are you?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Question of the Day (Tuesday)
Which of the following BEST describes you as a cyclist?
Most people fit into more than one category. But pick the ONE that best describes you as a rider.
• Commuter
I'm reducing my carbon imprint. Or, I don't own a car.
• Recreational
It's all fun and games for me
• Fitness
I use cycling to stay in shape and keep the weight off
• Athletic
I'm always striving to record my Personal Best
• Competitive
I like to race head-to-head against others in crits, road races, on trails, etc.
• Professional
It's all about the Podium Girls

I want to say fitness, but looking at my physique, I am certainly not fit. I'm recreational, but striving for better fitness ... let the sandbagging begin :D

Too many rules. I must be a contrarian first and foremost. So..
The kind who wants to get along with all the other kinds, mainly...
There is a user on this forum who has a moniker that describes what kind of cyclist I am. He is, "meanderthal."
• Recreational
It's all fun and games for me
• Fitness
I use cycling to stay in shape and keep the weight off
I bike for both these reasons, but if it wasn't fun, I wouldn't ride.
So I say Recreational. This fits best with the Mtb, which in itself is a blast to ride.

I think all kinds of riding are fun, Drew, even when my quads are ready to explode! :D
I actually gained weight when I focused on long-distance cycling. Cutting out 20 miles a week for running did my waistline in.
BTW, I saw my Coach Dan yesterday. He's got cuts all over his face, a chunk gauged out of one palm and he can't walk well because of a football sized contusion on his quad... but he still won the race and tells me that mountain biking is fun!

I'm sometimes all of those, even competitive and professional - you guys just haven't recognized my killer instincts on a bike or superior handling skills (I even bit it like a pro). But if I'm not having fun, I'm not riding anymore, so I'd have to say I belong mostly in the recreational category. :D

Recreational for me - I'd love to say it was for fitness, but the limited amount of riding I do nowadays combined with the need to de-tub say otherwise.

Commuting, mostly. I don't own a car, and I take the bus, cycle, or mooch rides from people to go everywhere. I even have a milk crate I can strap on my rear rack for full fred-y goodness! :D
Now that I know UCLA has a cycling team, I'll be gradually increasing the speed and distance of my commute (now around 5-12mi), so I can build up stamina. Hopefully by next fall I'll be an athletic and competitive cyclist too.

When I first moved to LA, I was on the late end of 20 and all I had was $300 in my pocket, two suitcases and no car (it's my "I walked three miles both ways in the snow...er...sand" story). Anyway, I wish I had been cool enough to buy a bike (after I got a job, of course), and ridden around when I was living in Westwood and working at UCLA. It would have been a great choice for grocery shopping and such. I bummed rides too or walked. I also rode the buses out here...that's a whole other topic, them there buses.

I ride my bike so i could join the HHCMF Club (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=1738868&postcount=7).
:D
And because it makes my legs look secksy. At least when they're shaved...

But I would feel a little ridiculous calling myself a professional cyclist. So I guess I'll abstain from voting.

I can't vote for more than one option. I commute, race, and ride for recreation and fitness.
edit: I voted for competitive, just because I can't seem to keep myself away from competition in things I love.

• Competitive
I like to ride fast and hard but just suck at racing on the road in real races. I'd say I'm more competitive with myself because I always try to push the limits farther and father + it sucks when my friends are faster then me and I can't do jack about it:p
Commuter/Recreational - I may ride into work but I certainly take my time getting there. :)

Eww, yes the buses. They're the reason I got the folder--racks are always full, so you can't put your bike on them, but if you miss one, you have to wait up to an hour to catch the next one. The public transport system is getting better though, albeit slowly.
Apparently I'm a member of the HHCMF club too. Lovely. Do we have an official shirt? Stickers? Reflective lime-green vest? Milk-crate decal? :D

They had some HHCMF shirts afew years ago it seems (check the commuting forum). However i'd like to see a nice HHCMF jersey made. :D
Commuter and Rec rider. It's more of a fun thing for me and the enjoyment of just riding around. Depends on one's frame of mind and what they want to accomplish or strive for on any particular day. Some like speed and their rides are like time trials, while others take their time and take in the scenery...I'm somewhere inbetween.

I'm going with fitness, but it's not for weight: it's for blood pressure. I started commuting by bike to try to keep my BP in check, but now I'm sufficiently hooked that bicycles are again my main form of recreation as well -- I used to be a dedicated MTBer a decade ago. The good news is that my blood pressure continues to hover in the normal range nowadays.

I was just thinking that. OCP, Fred, and man oggler (for Mary and Joy) should have been added. But, it's not my poll.

I picked Commuter because that is really the only time I have to ride. During the weekends, I'm usually doing daddy chores and don't have time to ride.
However, I could also be categorized under Fitness as well. By riding, I dropped 60 points off my cholesterol in the course of 18 months. :)

Striving to be a fitness rider, but sometimes feel like a poser or a fred!
Definitely not a man-oggler.

I would commute, yet our work does not have sufficient facilities for being coworker friendly(read not smelly). Thanks to a forward looking business owner. Besides, I would be late everyday, turning a 1.5 mile ride into a 3 hour tour. So, I carpool. We're a 1 car family now.
I would call it recreation. For me. It's too manic for the generally accepted definition.
I've become more fit. Not that's what I sought. And I've always enjoyed the athletic aspects of the sport.
I've actually competed in the past. There is simply no time to devote properly to the effort. Team or individual.
If there was a system that paid slow moving cyclists, I would be there on salary.

I'm more of a woman-ooggler. :D
Back in the leather hairnet days, I used to race competively. But in recent years it's mainly been as a recreational diversion/cross training from my running. Though it now does have a little bit of an athletic component since I am adding triathlons to my resume (and thus adding TT bike, race wheels, etc to my inventory...), my running fuels my desire for PR's, and the bike is still mainly for fun.

I would suggest that, too, but let's face it. People rarely start cycling just to oggle women because there aren't many of them. They go to gyms instead.

Recreational for me. I'm still trying to bike to work more often, but so far I'm pretty much just a weekend warrior. :p
Fitness/Recreational here....I'd like to mainly do liesurely rides for fun but plan to ride mainly for exercise. I'd love to join the HHCMF but my office frowns on leaving bike in cubicles.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in this thread.:roflmao: I'm really laughing because I was commuting down Cesar Chavez yesterday and was so proud of myself because I was passing all the guys coming from their jobs. I thought I was going real fast until I saw my computer only register 8 mph.:o
I guess I'm a fitness/recreational/commuter biker.:)

You guys oughta try Yoga classes. Seriously hot flexible women twisting in all kinds of interesting ways. And the man/woman ratio is the opposite of cycling. Yeah like six girls to one guy...
Side benefit it might help with the bike...won't hurt. I see more climbers taking up Yoga....

That and you get the bonus of smelling feet, something I, in particular, have an issue with. Smelling armpits I can handle, but feet smell makes me gag.
