RIDE CANCELED DUE TO SNOWY CONDITIONS ON MT. PALOMAR.
Mel and I are strongly considering another KOM training ride this Saturday (2/16). We liked the Pie Ride so much, we're heading back to Palomar. We're cutting the distance substantially, while keeping the vertical gain pretty much the same.
The route is uncomplicated, but the ride will be difficult:
1. Climb South Grade to the Observatory
2. Descend East Grade
3. Turn around, climb East Grade
4. Descend South Grade
5. Finish, vow to sell bike and never ride again, eat. Once blood sugar levels normalize, reconsider plan to sell bike.
We'll roll at 8:15am. Meet at 7:45am at the Pie Ride start: Harrah's Rincon Casino, 777 Harrah's Rincon Way, Valley Center, CA 92082.
No SAG, so come prepared. Bring it.

Does this mean you guys aren't coming up for the Mulholland ride? :(

Yeah, unfortunately we're gonna bail and do Palomar again. We were gonna come to LA, get a hotel for Friday, etc., but that schedule is a bit unruly for this weekend. Palomar is a pain to get to, but it's a bit easier than Calabasas, especially for a one-day trip.
We definitely plan to come up and do Mulholland sometime before the Mulholland Challenge, tho.

You could do it, James.
As a compromise, just do the first climb, head down, and play some slots until lunch. I'll give you 300 slot credits.*
*Offer applies only to 1-cent slots. 25% of any winnings must be returned. Not valid with any other offer, nor can offer be combined with any other offer. Additional 7.87% tax on winnings may apply.

500 credits (same exclusions apply)?
Take off the first climb, add another 5000 credits, delete the 25% clause, throw in lunch... plus dessert, and you've got yourself a deal!

I'll pass that through our legal department.....
How many miles is this? I would like to join. I don't ride with others too much so I can't really gauge my climbing skills till I do. Plus after riding TDPS last weekend I find it much more fun and safer with company.

Harrahs to summit is about 13 miles, summit to observatory is about another 8 miles round trip, east grade is about 14 miles,
Easy metric century + more if you want.
Simple route, from Harrahs to Observatory and back w/o riding on the east grade is around 44 miles i think

58 to do all the options.
13.5 from Harrah's to the Palomar store. 9.2 for the observatory route. 22 to go down and up East Grade Rd. 13.5 back.
The last 13.5 is the fun part.

Sounds good but I have the Butterfield double on the 16th! Only 6,900 ft. of climbing on the double, i.e. peanuts by your standards!
I will have to train for Mulholland! Well, plus, I have that GMR ride on the 23rd, if I've recovered from Butterfield by then. Or, really, even if I haven't!

I just bikely the proposed route
S. Grade to store, store to Obseratory, back to store, down E. Grade to Henshaw for fuel.
A complete reverse of this route which include the observatory TWICE is 70 mile and 11,513 ft of climbing or dowhill:D

How about a ride up the coast to that coffee shop on Monday morning, same time and place and be back around lunch time????
My weekend plans just fell through (was going to visit my parents', but after a phone call a few minutes ago, that just got postponed by a week) so I guess I'm in since I'm no longer headed up to the LA area.

Ok. I bailed out of Magicant's Mulholland ride and joining this one instead. See some of you again this Saturday!

Keep in mind that the overall distance isn't much, but there's A LOT of climbing. If you do both grades (South and East) it will be around 10K feet of climbing. Just so you know....

There are a few bail out spots if your legs aren't up for it. But once you have gotten on the E. Grade you have to climb out regardless if you go all the way down the hill. Along the 76 there are a few small climbs from Lake Henshaw to the fork, from the fork to Harrahs is all downhill. This is prolly about 1000ft of climbing oppose to the 3k climbing back up East Grade. You'll enjoy it. Bring sunblock cuz you WILL need it!!
Thanks. I think I'll put my compact crank back on for this.
I'm in too but will need a route map because I know I can't climb like some of you and will most likely get dumped like tonights garbage I'm about to take out. Here's a partial RS. At mile 22.7, instead of turning right, go left onto East Grade Rd. When you get to the bottom of East Grade, there's a stop sign. Turn around and climb back up. Naturally, if you decide not to do East Grade, you disregard this and follow the RS.

Folks, for what it's worth, this from the local newspaper. Perhaps it'll be best if you buy needed water anywhere near the top?
By: North County Times
PALOMAR MOUNTAIN -- County health officials today issued a boil water order for the Palomar Observatory drinking water system after tests showed E. Coli and other bacteria in the water, officials said.
The system at 35899 Canfield Road serves the observatory, 13 residences, and Palomar Mountain School, County spokesman Jack Miller said. The system has tested positive for E. Coli and total coliform bacteria, Miller said. E. Coli indicates the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste and poses a health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems, Miller said. Total coliform bacteria can come from soil and can indicate a problem with the system.
The boil water order will remain in effect until the system has been disinfected and tests show the bacteria is gone, Miller said.

The Butterfield Double is that day, and I'm already signed up. We'll have it easy with only 6,900 feet of climbing over the 200 miles. Have a great ride!

What's the problem? Drinking water with E. Coli and total coliform bacteria helps you HTFU.

I'm definitely out. Need to spend time at home.
It will probably be plowed this morning but I can't find anything on current road conditions. The last update on the local Cleveland National Forest site was 1/8.
I'll call the ranger station early this afternoon and see if they have an update.
