Bicycle Mechanics - DA chainring & Rival crank compatability

I'm installing a DA chain ring on a Rival crank and the chainring overhangs the arms of the spider by about 2mm on either end. Is this a potential problem?

(someone will ask what the F I am doing putting a DA chainring on a Rival crank. Last Sept, at mile 87 on a century, a guy on a Rivendell caused me to hit the tarmac. I was fine but my chainring was bent enough to end my ride. This guy was nice enough to say "hey, I have a DA chainring (130bcd, 53t) if you give me your address I'll send it to you." The guy did. :beer: end of story.)

Should be just fine. You might file down the points to prevent anything snagging. But as long as it fits flat and firmly into the slot, I see no problem at all. I would ride it.

^^I agree. I initially thought this would be a problem as force would not be distributed throughout the chainring and thus cause some kind of damage and possible failure (think a 10s chainring on a FG). But I later realized (in the shower) that the force is transfered at the stackbolts and not where the chainring sits "on" the lip of the spider (as pictured above). So, other than looking kind of funny, it is not a problem.

The OCP police might get you, but otherwise you're fine
