The island known as the United Kingdom (as well as Ireland) separated from Europe many thousands of years ago, before recorded time.

Are they part of the European Economic Union? Yes.
Is their currency the Euro? No, they still use Pound Sterling

I hope this helps.

Mmmm.. Well I am English born and bred there however my passport is European and as I am now living and working freely under the EU (European Union) in the netherlands ;of which being part of europe is a rule I guess that makes UK part of Europe ;)

Assuming you have a UK passport it would indicate that the UK is, at least, part of the EU even if it's not a Schengen (sp?) country.

The term "Europe" has multiple uses. Its principal ones are geographical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography) and political (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics).

Physiographically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peninsula) of the continent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent) of Eurasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasia); its limits are well defined by sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea) to the North, South and West, and by a slightly arbitrary boundary discussed below (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe#Geography_and_extent) on the east and south-eastern side. The Ural mountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ural_mountains) are usually taken as the eastern limit of Europe; points beyond are not usually considered to be part of the continent.
Politically, Europe comprises those countries in the European Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union), but may at times be used more casually to refer to both the EU together with other non-EU countries in the same general region. In addition, people in countries such as Ireland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland), United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom), Scandinavia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia) and the Mediterranean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean) islands, may routinely refer to "continental" or "mainland" Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Europe) (or simply "the Continent"), as a term for the main land mass.

When in Ireland I heard the term "continentals" used. Like "you may want to wait a few minutes for the next tour, since a bunch of continentals just went in. They do consider themselves part of Europe, unlike the British.

"Is the UK now not part of Europe!!"

hehehehehehehehe.............!!!!!

ok:

UK = United Kingdom this includes England Wales Scotland Ireland
Britain usually reffers to the mainland i.e England Wales and Scotland
England is the bit in the middle that includes london the captial!

Scotland Wales and Ireland are seperate countries from England All these make the united kingdom

By definition if the UK is part of europe then I guess that means England Ireland Scotland and Wales also are european!!

Most People from the UK regard them selves as part of Europe however physically the UK is seperate from Mainland Europe i.e you need a ferry to get there. But you also need a ferry to get to ireland and Irland is part of the UK.

So..

Yes the UK is part of Europe as Canada is part of the americas!! as is Australaia part of Asia Pasific! and so on and so forth ;)

If they all want to be that is another argument for another day ;)

i mean although UK is historically and culturally a very important part of Europe, it has been often labeled as US 52nd state... and they always act very cautiously when it comes to European Community's policies...

If the UK is the 52nd state, which country is the 51st?

I've never heard of the UK being called the 52nd state. But I've heard Puerto Rico called the 51st state.

i meant, 51st... forgot DC is not a state... we Europeans aren't that good in geography...;)

anyway it is only a joke referring to the habit of the UK government to back up US foreign policies...

sorry, I was about to take offence as Canada (especially now with a Conservative government), often appears to support US foreign policy and often is referred to as "the 51st state". Well, we do make their cars!

Nah, can't be. The budget for teaching the British to cook alone could be spent on Maryland.

Here we go again.....

The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Ireland Wales and Northern Ireland.....

The Republic of Ireland is a free and independent state that is fully part of Europe up to and including using the common currency.

Ireland has been a republic for almost a century now and is beholden to nothing British. The Queen is not on the currency or any other form of official paperwork and that's just fine.

On a somewhat related note Padraig Harrington is the reigning Open Champion...
