Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have a bike which has a 1 1/8" integrated headset. I wish to install a new fork. The old crown race is firmly attached to the old fork. My bike shop guessed it might be $35 to install the new fork (no cutting required and they would probably be able to reuse the old crown race) First that seems a bit steep=-although I lack the tool to take of the crown race-yes I have read about hammers and punches and screw drivers-not for me. I also wonder about reusing a relatively inexpensve part which would seem to have a good chance of structural change due to removal.
My headset is a FSA and the only other thing it says besides FSA is IS2. I have looked on FSA's site and this headset is not referanced. I have looked at the crown races for sale at FSA and the headset is not referenced. I have e-mailed FSA and they have not replied. I have tried to call-no luck.
So Jensen is selling this crown race. I'm thinking maybe a crown rac is a crown race...

I would think as long as it fits in the bearing...

It indicates that the Orbit X is a angular contact cartridge bearing for a standard (Aheadset) style, and the IS-2 is an angular contact for an integrated (Cane Creek) style. So there's a chance they're the same.

Thanks Bob that helped a lot. the crown race I reference in the OP is for a standard threadless headset. I need one for the FSA Orbit IS and it is called a crown bearing seat. Here is the FSA web store page. No Orbit IS-not sure what the other models are...

I don't know if this will help or not, but here goes... IS-2 is referring to the "integrated system" or it's also sometimes called "international standard", however there is nothing standard about integrated headsets anymore. This is a good site for learning about all the different variances out there: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=68
I believe that the IS-2 outside diameter is 41.5mm, and the IS is 41mm. The IS has a 45degree angle of contact inside the frame. Both sizes use a 36degree angle of contact at the fork race, so I suspect that as long as the FSA is using a cartridge bearing, just about any fork race for a IS-2 should work fine. Most all the fork races I see these days are no longer the type that need to be pressed (or "banged") on. They have a split in them, allowing them to be pressed on by hand. The space left by the split is only about a mm in width, so no worries there. I believe this is a result of the increasing number of all carbon forks, and the fact that you cannot slide hammer a fork race onto an all carbon fork. I've been using one for over a year sans any problems at all.

Thanks redtires. I continue to be amazed at the depth of knowlwedge and helpfulness of people on this site. My headset does indeed use a cartridge bearing. So if I am reading you correctly, I can use any manufactures fork race... I would much rather use a split one as it is going on a carbon tube. Anyone know where I can find one of these?
Thanks

op,
1. Your LBS should be able to pull the old crown race w/o a problem, if not find another
2. The crown race you've shown is for the standard (aheadset) which has a cup as mentioned by the other posters. My guess is that the race for the cups are not as wide (missing lip)
3. I have the crown race for another integrated style which is wider with a lip (orbit z, orbit extreme pro). The lip should should fit flush with the bottom of the headtube. FSA needs to have better diagrams of their headsets.
4. I just pulled a crown race for a cane creek IS headset, and it had a wider lip on it.

Interestingly, the FSA page has been updated in the 24hrs since my first post. They now have the Orbit IS crown race. It is $10, but they want another $9 for shipping-whew $19 sure seems high.
Maybe I wil go back to the local bike option-thanks for the encouragement revolator on the bike shop not damaging the crown race-I was concerned that it was on so tight. The shop is a good place and i trust them. It just seems so simple if you can find the correct part to do it yourself. I am very interested if anyone knows a source for a FSA Orbit IS crown race-preferably one with a split.
Thanks

I was looking at that same site last night. The picture of the IS crown race has the lip.
It's not a problem if the LBS has the right tool. I bought a cheap one, and it worked like a charm:
