Many thanks gents from a lurker. I followed a thread on creaks and bike noises to the Sheldon Brown page.
I've got a Trek 1.5 that developed a creak on pedal rotations but I never could tell when riding where the noise was coming from. I could have sworn it was coming from the front end somewhere but it was an unmistakable once a pedal rotation noise.
Sheldon said it could have been the stack bolts. My bike has 5. I stuck an allen wrench in four of them and not one budged not even a little. About the time I thought this was a dead end I put it in bolt number 5 and it spun a quarter turn.
Took my bike outside and mother of pearl, no more creak. In fact my bike is dead silent again.
Many thanks from a lurker. Keep talking. Guys like me can use all the help we can get.
