Question of the Day (Thursday)

Besides cycling, what kinds of training/exercise do you do on a regular or semi-regular basis?

Check all that apply. If it's not listed, sound off here!

What? No tennis? Don't all asian parents send their kids to tennis class?

I checked running, although I'm only coming off of day 3. Legs are hurting today, I pushed pretty hard yesterday. My route starts with a nice uphill and finishes with a nice uphill with a long downhill middle.

Weight training is back on the list now that my apartment has added a little fitness room, so it's uber-convenient.

I'll add the swimming later this year when I start prepping for the Fall triathlon.

I checked none; although I would like to start running (got the shoes, just too lazy), and one of my 2008 resolution is learn how to swim.

I barely have enough cycling, let alone more time to add additional activities.

He's right, a choice is missing ;)

I like rowing (Concept2), and it's a great complement to biking, but I am too focused on biking to incorporate it as a regular routine. I really only use it when we have stretches of rain.

I dance, which is not up there. I like the new house my family moved into because we have lovely wood floors I can do pointe on. I also swim--used to do it competitively in HS, with moderate success. My specialty: the breaststroke ;)

A new acquaintance told me to get into running, since I already cycle and swim, so that I could join triathlons with her. I'm like nooooo, I hate running. It might be excellent exercise, but it makes my feet hurt. I should get into weight training though--the only weights I do on a regular basis are my 10-20lb bags, and that's not enough lifting at all.

I run on occasion, lift weights regularly, hit the ol' punchin bag, and have a skateboard I used to be obsessed with that I now ride only compulsorily. oops, I didn't check yoga-which I do on my own sometimes but haven't been to a class in five years.

I think markg sums it up best for me:

float, HAMMER, jog

It's now all about cycling. A few months ago, before I tore a hamstring, it was also about running.

I dislike running. I used to be a decent runner when I was wrestling in high school, but I won't do it again by choice. I used to play pick-up basketball too, but it's been at least a year.

I swim 2x a week; first workout about a mile with the second slightly shorter. Both days also do hamstring, inner thigh and hip machines plus abs. Treadmill once a week plus abs. Get out for surfin' when I can. Bike probably averages about 65 miles per week, with summer sessions closer to 90 and winter...well, you know. I'm adding one indoor trainer workout every week or so with Coach Troy.

Run with Snail's Pace running club. They are truly a great club. I would encourage anybody wanting to run to use Snail's Pace as a resource, especially in the OC. Also, use a Nordic Track skiing machine to get me prepped for that long Nordic ski season we have in SoCal.

Any recommendations for swimming in the Glendale area? I was looking at 24 hour fitness since it's going to be between home and work when my office moves.

Anyone know of any better options?

Weight training; mostly overall core conditioning and joint health.

Besides cycling, I like to run, lift weights, & ride my fixed gear.

Spin class and weights mostly and the tread climber which is an awesome workout when on a high level. I did that this morning followed by lunges and some leg weights that didn't involve putting weight on my shoulders. My butt is still burning.

My gym? Dude, be prepared to get up close and personal with the hairy-speedo-men. :p

Running, swimming, and Bikram Yoga (the super hot room type). I've been told that at my age, I should be adding some weight work in the gym, but it is SO boring!!

I was a runner first, so I still do that a couple days a week and love it. It's just so tough on your body compared to biking (especially after about 35 marathons ). Tried swimming, gave it up quickly. Do some weight training. I teach aerobics and sculpting classes, but since I teach 60-80 year olds I don't know if it counts. :)

Skateboarding/rollerblading grouping made me LOL for some reason. There's a woman around here that rollerblades along the coast. Her speed is comparable to a bike. I'd guess that she burns more calories per hour than a lot of cyclists.

I was on a loaded touring bike and taking my time, but it still blew my mind.

Mainly cycling. I would love to start doing Martial Arts again, but just can't find a good one. Most stuff I found is watered down, where instructors have no idea what they are teaching.

For Martial Arts, I've heard good things about Tim Cartmell in Garden Grove.

Yeah, that's about how mine go too. Kind of sad to get off the bike in good position, then watch kids and old ladies run past me...

Surfing is still my #1. Biking moving up a close second.

After wgt.training for 20+ yrs. it's all about squats, squats, more squatsand, then benching, lat pulls (or chin-ups)and lunges - the "Big 4". I'm 59 y.o. and maintaining strength takes on a whole new meaning every year now.

Good book on weight lifting/fitness: "New Rules of Lifting", Schuler & Cosgrove.

For me, cycling is a complement to doing yoga. I do 2-3 vinyasa flow classes and 1-2 yin classes a week. I'm actually trained as an instructor, though I hardly ever teach.

I'll be starting to hike again soon to get in shape for backpacking in the spring-summer-fall (too much of a wimp to get out much in the winter).
