What sort of gear ratios do you need to qualify for these categories? I think I'm a smasher.

well i spin 63 inches at a consistent 100-130rpm, which is around 22mph. smoking roadies all day as their lactic acid catches up with them.

Is smasher a cross between spinner and masher? I think I'm a smasher.

73" on one bike, 75" on the other. I'm gonna go ahead and vote smasher. I get spun out occassionally on both ratios.

Then again, spinning and mashing are terms more relevently applied to bikes where you can shift gears. You're always going to be mashing when your RPM is below 70 and spinning when it's above 100.

Used to mash 78, currently spinning and 68, about to bump it up to some to 73. Smashin' it.

Going down hills and on flats I am a spinner.

22 ain't that fast. you probably pass roadies when they are cooling down/taking breathers during intervals or something like that. lol.

Definite spinner on my 39x18T fixed commuter. With 700x32c tires, I'm at 58.5 gear inches and 17.4 MPH at 100 RPM.

I'd like to think I'm a smasher, but I'm probably more of a masher. 52x17 fixed with 700x28c conti contacts and a backpack. 81.9 gear inches but I'm at 90 rpm cruising without a headwind. Slower into the wind and faster when in traffic. Thank god new orleans is flat.

I went from mashing to spinning. Started with 48/17, went to 48/18, and now am at 46/18 and liking it more and more. I find that in NYC urban traffic, it is just too rare that you get long enough stretches to really get it up to speed and keep it there, and the bigger the ratio the more I'm just mashing to accelerate, then come to another stop or slowdown.

69er here. I think that qualifies me as a spinner.

I started out at 78, went up to 82 (drunk on speed), and then started experimenting with lower gear inches.

I discovered that at 72 gear inches I could ride without using a brake and without skidding.

I continued on down to 65 gear inches before my average times for trips around town started taking longer.

Nonetheless, I continued down to 58 gear inches.

Too far.

I think I'll settle in at 60 gear inches, first for the great braking power, and, secondly, for the acceleration.

Yes, I can't go anywhere very fast, but I can go quick.

I push 65 inches on my current fixed conversion, but I think on the next bike, I'll try something more like 70. I don't want to go much higher, just a little bit to make getting down the big hill I have to ride every day a little more fun.

Guess I'm a smasher. Depending on what the ride calls for, I will do whatever it takes.

I run 75.8 gear inches usually, and 81 occasionally. Too many hills here to run 81 all the time. I also run a front brake, of course. Usually spinning between 85 and 95 rpm on the flats. Slower and faster on the ascents and descents respectively.

I generally ride 70 gear inches or so. It is a good winter training gear. It puts me at a 18-20 mph cruise, which is perfect for establishing a good base. As the season progresses, I bump up to 73 gear inches. If I do a fast road group ride, I bump up to 81. This is necessary with the pace of group rides - they cruise at 24+ mph.

I used to run brakeless, but I got tired of sore knees. The terrain in WI is very hilly, and it just isn't fun skid-stopping after a 40 mile ride. Brakes are then super great!
