I had a serotta fit session done, and it was determined that my ideal bike would be a 52cm with a 58 cm top tube. Recently I picked up a bike with an unusually long top tube. The LBS guys were commenting on it, but it fit my dimensions. One of the guys said he had a bike with a really long top tube and you could really feel it going up hills.

Now, is this because he had a normal body? What's the difference climbing with a longer top tube as opposed to a longer reach stem if you end up in the same place?

And finally, how good of a rider do you have to be before you notice the difference?

If it fits right, you're fine. There's zero efficiency difference. I find a longer reach feels better for steep seated climbs because I can tug on the bars easier. My MTB is set up with a really long reach for this reason.

Do you mean the comparison between 2 bikes of equal reach, one with long TT/short stem and the other visa-versa?
OR
2 bikes of dirrerent reach?
