Foo - Climbing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sure, this could go in the road forum.
BUT I CAN ACT STUPID HERE IN FOO.
so lets talk about climbing steeep hillz on a modern, high performance road bike.
it hurts. it hurts badly. who knew there could be such horrible pain involved?
yet, as i am climbing... i feel how light the front of the bike is. the bike feels as light as a feather, but rock solid. it obeys my every command.
my legs do not.
i am sick now, because of that hard ride+climb.
i will ride in 30 more minutes.
TT practice, baby
my legs hurt just reading that.

It always confuses people around me why I like to climb on my bike
and why I keep doing it.
Maybe because all I can say after a long hard climb/ride is how my legs are hurting and sore.
Try starting out in cycling in the very flat Dallas area and then move back to Northern Calif and ride with guys like mtnwalker who love them thar hillz!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!
Can you say dropped every time!!
Thank God for Hammer Endurolytes! I just wish I knew about these magic pills when I did Hotter-N-Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, TX a couple years back in 100+ degree heat!

I'm a terrible climber, I admit it. Of course, the last time I tried to climb a trully bad hill was offroad and I was on this:

The bike actually weighs almost a third of my body weight, and I'm fairly heavy. :o But I suck at climbing on a light bike, too.

For a 190lb guy....I can hang on most climbs. I live in New England, so there are hills everywhere....you learn to deal with it. I think climbing is mostly mental once you get a decent level of bicycle fitness. The only time it really gets to me is on a century ride where they put the 2 mile long hill that is the steepest of the entire ride at the 90 mile mark!! But like Greg Lemond said once about climbing..."It never stops hurting, you just get faster."

A 2 mile climb for a 190 lb guy? I hope you're being silly!:D
Try this climb at 235 lbs!:p

At the very least with a climb there is a high likelihood of a descent so just get up there to enjoy the next part and hit the next hill with the same in mind.

Don't worry, at this point I'll make you look like Lance Armstrong! haha!
I luckily haven't had the pleasure to ride with those guys/gal yet. Allen killed us one time when we rode with him in the hills near his place in HMB!! Then there was the ride from Santa Cruz to HMB and back. Luckily I only did the half century! hehe! I don't think I could keep up with Smooth and Sassy on the tandem!
And Mr.Beanz... I'll be right behind you on that climb... in the SAG wagon gasping for air! :)
