Ok - on the Austin Road Riders site I was talking about the merits of encouraging people to commute by bike and said something along the lines it might even help reduce our dependency for foreign oil and our needs to protect our interests there. I concluded by saying "Save a soldier? Ride a bike". Well, the idea has caught on(with an ex-soldier leading the way) and it looks like I'm going to have champ-sys print some up.

I thought I'd throw it out here to:

a.)discuss what you think of the saying in general.
b.)see what people think of the jersey idea.
c.)see if anyone would be interested in getting in on the jersey order.

:)

i think it's a great idea! interested to hear how the pickup-truck-types in texas reacts to these jerseys!

also what about:

"drugs don't fund terrorists, SUVs do"

Hmmmm....

Done carefully in a subtle non-dogmatic way, this could work.

AS a current Soldier

LIKE IT... yes I'd love to be in ON the jersey... and how about profits to the FISHER HOUSE (place near military hospitals were family members can stay while their Soldier is recovering)

Hmmm - actually I hadn't even thought about selling it for profit at all, but I really like that idea. Nice way of saying thanks for what you guys (and gals ;) ) do.

I wonder if Voler might sign on to this as a fund raiser? They make nicer jerseys, too. Something to look at.

While I support your position, I think putting anything controversial on your bike jersey just makes you a bigger target for redneck pickup trucks.

Why not get VFW, VA and any other charities/associations to sponsor printing costs in return for future sales revenues? That is, 10-20% of retail is donated from each sale.

I like it.

I'd wear one.

Use a red-white-blue color scheme. The conflicting messages will confuse the rednecks long enough for you to ride away.

I'm too fast for anybody to read my jersey anyway.

I'm ambivalent on the jersey idea - as active Army - I don't like to flaunt/announce my service when not in uniform, but the Fisher House idea is a good one.

I'm in. Although I don't think anyone in a car would be able to read the text while riding. A more muted color scheme than red, white and blue would be better though. Something like green digital camo with black lettering. Cool idea.

Since I live in Texas and drive a "pickup truck" and am probably as redneck as the guy passing me in his "pick up truck" I can assure you that a jersey that sais something about the armed forces or about a soldier will probably make you safer than anything else you could wear. Now if you are riding in a part of the country where tree huggers and anti war and anti soldier types live you might have a problem. But in most of Texas you will probably be safe.

Marine digital or Army digital COOL!!!!

In my head my idea for the jersey was a simple two toned color scheme - perhaps red with as big and clear of a black font as I could manage. One side panel would say "Save a Soldier", the other would say "Ride a Bike", ect... My goal would be to a.) make it as noticeable as possible and b.) make it as legible as possible.

I kind of like the camo idea too though...

+1 on the cammo..
If we could get the manfacturer to push the prceeds to help injured soldiers I'm in for one.
We could hit up the LBS's in our area to see if they would resell them. It isn't taking a position on the war perse and monies earned go to help soldiers in need nothing wrong with that.

+1.. I love the idea, and would so be in on it.

Camo is a great idea too. Either digital, or older, "woodland" style. Hell you could even make it red white and blue camo..

You could Make the majority of the jersey camo, then where the lettering is, have it be a flat white, with black lettering. It would be hard to read anything printed ontop of camo.

Maybe. But the last thing I need on the road is camo. Fact is, it might just defeat the whole purpose. Not that I couldn't use a little in the mid-section.

I like it.. Although it is a very simplistic view of the current conflict, it certainly does have some relevance. Maybe just the sleeves in MARPAT or Army digital..too much and the red necks just won’t see you.. it works that well The Fisher house is a great idea as well.

I'll start trying to put some of these ideas together and post 'em here. I'm all thumbs with most graphics programs though. I can edit photos pretty well but this is a different beast all together...

Camo on the road is different from camo in the field. I think it would stand out fairly well against asphalt.

I think you should have it say the text on the front and back. If you're going to be doing this to make a statement, which applies, you should have people who are driving behind you be able to read it too...

I actually like this idea, lets see how it goes, but I'd probably be interested in a jersey (when I get paid next probably).

I would stay away from camo, camo is camo whether you are in the woods or on the street, it will be harder for the tree huggers to see ya.

Seems to me that "stop invading the oil-rich countries" is a pretty popular sentiment in the tree hugger states. Anti-war people are anti-killing (of civilians or of bicyclists) not anti-soldier.

Plus it would give the cagers an extra excuse as to why they didn't see you. Unless, of course, we were to make it with neon camo. Something like this: http://www.atlasmousepads.com/Camo-03.gif

I think it's a fantastic idea, especially if done as a fundraiser for Fisher House. While I'm no design guy (I'm terrible with that stuff), I think it would be important to be able to read the full message, and not have each statement on opposite sides of the jersey (as I believe the OP suggested - apologies if I'm wrong). And definitely +1 on Voler over Champ...

+1 But Air Force.

My base has a Fisher House and we always do volunteer work there. I'd buy one to support the cause.

Ok so now we just need a design. then find a manufacturer to make em at a discount so we can sell them and get funds to the right people. Maybe Fisher House would want their logo on the sleve. Small but respectible. If we do it under a non profit org then for the Jersy manufacturer and the bike shops that buy it to sel it is a tax deduction. That shouldn't be the reason for doing it but honestly if it helps get the ball rolling and jerseys on people then it is worth it.

How about everyone toss in a design if your good at photoshop go for it.
Revenmore, post the rules as it were. Then we can do a vote post for the top three or so. Heck if it looks like folks would like it maybe we could even do branch specific designs, which would cool because each person could support their local branch. :)
whew this could get outta hand in a hurry I can tell already.

As a former Marine, I approve this message. I really like the digital camo idea.

also what about:

"drugs don't fund terrorists, SUVs do"

'Hell, I like [that], you can come over to my house and f* my sister'

I think that lil quote, yours - not mine, should be somewhere on the jersey.

I'm in with whatever design and really like the idea of donating the profit. Whatever the overall design, it should include a US flag(s) on the sleeve(s).

Lol - yeah this could get out of hand in a hurry. ;) I'll start trying to organize stuff for this today. Really I had just initially thought of seeing who wanted one and everyone pony up $$$ for the actual cost and then ordering the jerseys. I really like the Fisher House idea though. That presents a whole set of issues and is taking it to a whole other level of organization. Any suggestions/thoughts on what the mark up should be over costs to get a donation to the Fisher House?

Also - what is digital camo? ;)
