Congratulations! It’s a great sport with lots of challenges. If you like discipline and fun it’s a great combination. I am returning after 18 years.

Good luck. :)

I just signed up for my first Tri, also...but I'm doing the one in Naperville on August 10th. If I do okay in this one, then I'll sign up the for Accenture sprint distance in Chicago next year. I've been wanting to do one since I was 35 (I'm 42 now)...but could never commit myself to it. This is the year I'm gonna do it! Congrats and good luck to you!

thanks for the support, linda thats awesome... im kinda mad the naperville one is women only because im sure that would be a fun race to run.... im toying with the idea of doing a sprint in batavia in june, it has a shorter swim and in a pool to get me ready for what chicago will be like.

as far as the tri im amazed i like it as much as i do so far... i started on a bike. liked swimming and now im like ill add running in.... i was the fat kid in gym class who hated running and now i want to run.... its unbelivable to me

Good luck! I too have decided to train for a tri. My motivation is to get myself back into the shape I was when I was in the Corps oh too many years ago. I want to be able to DO a tri, I don't know that I will be signing up to compete in one (at least not this year). I might find myself signing up for the Chicago tri in august, but again I'm not certain I'll be to that point by then. Having injured my hip/back in the Corps the running might just be a little more pain then I want to deal with "just for the fun of it". I also need to find a reasonably priced good road bike. Having only done the mountain bike thing for a long time it might take some getting used to this whole road/tri thing.

Good luck with the commitment (my wife thinks I need to be COMMITTED for the idea of doing a tri).

Good work. Friend of mine i train with came in 15th last year in the oly. He can't say enough good things about chicago....been doing it for years. It's his favourite race.

yeah i cant wait. the only thing im worried about is do i want to olympic or not, i think i am signing up for a local sprint in june, so im wondering now if i should change my entry.... the swim im sure i could work up to, the bike would be easy, but running over winter longest distance i could go on the treadmill was 1 mile and id quit, but this weekend im going to a running store for my first real shoes.... its the 6 mile run.... lol but i guess i could walk

i live out west around aurora / naperville

That's where I work...just on Diehl behind the Suds Car Wash. Live in Westchester.

I used to ride with the Wheaton Spokes guys regularly and hope to get back with them again this spring...

THey are great guys to ride with. Raoulf is as good as it gets as a person and when it comes to managing a large group of riders.

ceiph...You may want to check out the Naperville Tri...I think they have changed it this year to include men! At least that's what the info on their website is indicating based on what they have listed for age-group awards going to men, as well as women. They also have a Clydesdale/Athena division (by weight)...which is what I plan on competing in. For what it's worth...I too, was the fat kid who couldn't run to save my life. I now can run 4 miles everyday...granted I'm a slow runner (10-min mile), but that's better than nothing I suppose.

Jeez looks like I found a good forum...I just signed up for the Accenture as my first too! Hiya everybody :) I may be crazy, but I went for the international distance...we'll see how it goes! I live and work(too much) in NW IN, so I can't really make it out to any of the Chicago group riding, but if I plan on doing any "warm ups" before the big one I'll let you all know and see if anyone else will be there!

I'm signed up for the Accenture sprint distance as well, and it's my first Tri.

Funny thing is, I've talked to several other people who are doing this as their first Tri as well. Sounds like it'll be a bunch of noobs out there. :D

In fact, now that I think about it, I haven't actually talked to anyone doing the Accenture sprint distance that has done this particular race before. Anyone?

Good Luck, ceiph. As for entering "only" a sprint, it will still be challenging. you will be grouping all 3 activities into a single event. It is challenging for sure. I am 55, and my first was a sprint (400 meter swim, 13 mile bike, 5k run). I had a middle-of-the-pack finish, and you are still looking at 1-2 hours of activity.

ceiph...is your June tri the Batavia Tri on June 8th? If so, I was going to do that one...but reconsidered since it is only 2 weeks from the US Women's Tri on June 22nd in Naperville. I wasn't sure if I could handle doing both of them in a 2 week span. Maybe next year I'll try for both. Oh..forgot to ask...did you decide to do that co-ed one in Naperville on August 10th? Is that the one that will be 2 weeks before the Accenture?
