Southern California - SD North County Century - March 16th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK, I'm calling this canceled. It looks like the weather may end up improving during the day, but it's still too dicey to be stuck out on a long ride in a cold rain. Rescheduled for March 22.
I posted an interest thread about this in January and there seemed to be enough interest to do it. This is a great ride covering some of the best areas of SD North County. The ride starts in Oceanside and heads down the coast to Solano Beach.
It turns east via Rancho Santa Fe/Del Dios to Escondido and continues out to Lilac Road, Couser Canyon and Rice Valley. It returns Oceanside via Fallbrook and Bonsall. I originally based it on an abbreviated version of the SD 200K brevet, but I asked Grumpy Pig to share some of this North County expertise to improve the route. So if the route sucks we can blame him.
When: Sunday March 16th
Where: Oceanside Amtrak Station Parking Lot, South Tremont Street, Oceanside
Start: Meet at 7:30, roll at 8:00
Route: http://www.geocities.com/grumpypig/Oceanside_Century.pdf
Elevation: 5-6K ft
Food Post-ride pig-out in Oceanside TBD

I live in fallbrook and know all the roads around here I strongly suggest that you not ride reche. That road has no bike lanes and poeple tend to drive a little crazy on that road. If you could I would say take east mission from the I 15

I second that. I'm totally in, as long as we avoid Reche rd.

We will skip Reche Road. Nice try Grumpy.I didn't look closely at the bikely route. I copied the route off of the '07 brevet RS. I'll change it to what, Mission? That's how I go through FB.

I'm in - weather and wife permitting.
Are you guys all hammerheads? I can keep up with about a 16 mph pace on a century, but not much better than that.

We are not all hammerheads. There shouldn't be a problem.

yeah avoid reche if at all possible. If you really want to do reche you can go up to east mission take a left of live oak and take that to reche. From that point reche actually has a bike lane and live oak will be a slight downhill the only problem with that is trying to cross east mission. If you need the extra miles that is. I am in but i will be only riding to fallbrook since I am going to ride from fallbrook to the meet point at the train station.

Hey Dan,
Any chance to change the start time to 8:00 AM? The daylight saving time begins on March 9, so 7:30 AM will feel like 6:30. On top of it I've got a party on the 15-th. Shnuddy's got a party too, so I'm sure she can also benefit from a later start. And I'm sure a later starting time will be more convenient for people coming from further north.
By the way, do you know what the climbing will be on this route?

Excellent suggestion. I forgot all about DST beginning in March. I will check in the climbing but I think it's in the 5-6K range.

Thanks for changing the start time, Dan. I knew the "Slacker King" won't let me down. ;) (Should have asked for 9 o'clock start, dammit :D).

9 guys so far (possibly 11). It looks like we'll have a small, high-quality group out there. :D I'd hate to celebrate my buddy's 40-th birthday with root beer, but I better... :(
I prerode part of the route today and have a suggestion for a route modification. The bad part is that it uses Reche Rd. The good news is that the Reche Rd. portion is very short and the other roads have lighter traffic than Mission.
Instead of staying on Mission, we would make a left on Live Oak, a right on Reche and a left on, I think, Winter Haven.
This gives us some fast descents on Live Oak and Winter Haven but also takes away the Sleeping Indian descent. It also takes away the climb on Burma and Sleeping Indian that takes us to the descent.
We can always make these descisions on the ride at the regroup points.
I'm out since I'm a bit too out of shape for a 100 mile ride. :o

I would say make the left on live oak too only if the traffic is not bad where you can actually make it across mission

I have lights. What I lack is motivation. I'm also managing my time really poorly thanks to, umm, outside influences. :o

Why is this better? You're just trying to confuse me.
Why is this better? You're just trying to confuse me.
There is less traffic on Live Oak and Winter Haven than on Mission. It probably cuts the mileage down too so if the original route was right at 100, the modification may put you at less than you need. Since you're the ride organizer, you should make all the tough decisions.
What about refuel stops? I'm pretty sure there's a 7-11 past the Lake Hodges climb. Unless it's really hot we can probably make it the gas station in Rainbow without another stop. If we need to we can go to the AM/PM on Twin Oaks & 15.
This is a great route. If anybody's on the fence, it's worth the trip.

I think it's a good idea to regroup/refuel at the AM/PM on Twin Oaks & 15. I don't remember where the 7-11 is that you're referring to.
I'm getting a bit worried about keeping up with you guys on the climbs. I can only manage about 8.5 mph at best on the Torrey Pines grade (outside), and 6 mph on the inside grade. I probably weigh more than most of you guys, plus my bike, fully loaded, is close to 40 lbs. On top of that, I'm just a few months shy of 60 years old. I know I can do a century OK, but if you guys think I'll slow you down too much, please don't be afraid to tell me now.

I'm pretty sure we have regroups. Besides, my TP speed is only ~10mph, so I'm not that much faster than you... even with a bike weighing half of yours. :p :D

Gentlemen, in case of lousy weather - I'm out. Right now they forecast rain for Sunday. If this materializes, don't wait for me. Otherwise, I'll be on time.
OK, I'm there -- unless it's raining. In that case I'll be joining JimmyNH -- in chickening out.

I think I'm now officially on the out list. I'm having work stress that has eaten into my riding and family related issues that are requiring my time this weekend. Sucks but it happens. I promise to try harder in the future, really I do. If I can, I'll try to at least do the first part of the ride and leave the group at Twin Oaks to head back home to Esco.
If it rains, any chance of scheduling a different date?
why would you skip the sleeping indian descent? that sht is amazingly fun. i hit 50 coming down it once.

you actually might want to think about not going on mission through downtown fallbrook. They are doing road work on main and mission and it is a really tight squeeze even for just cars. Like was said before you can go down live oak up, right on reche, and then you can take a left on green canyon or go straight on reche and do a left on stage coach which will take you past the high school and back to mission right before olive hill. It is just a suggestion
