I want to check them out--feel them--
look at the parts that go with. I'm willing to drive
a few hours so that means
pretty much anywhere as far north as Chico, west
as the Bay Area--etc.

That other thread about the triple got you going, didn't it...

Me, too. Plus a photo of a great touring bike with one in C&V.

Sheldon's site pretty much sold me.

I think they weigh a ton, though.

This wiki article has a nice cutaway diagram and list of pros and cons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohloff_Speedhub

They do weigh around a bit more.
About 1800g for the entire drive
train.

Still. . .

Unfortunately, I don't think many bike shops are going to have a thousand dollar hub hanging on a peg, especially when it's an item of such limited interest.

A guy at the Schlumpf booth at NAHBS mentioned the combination of a Rohloff hub and a Schlumpf crank. 28 speeds with no derailleur. :) All for only ~$1500.

Totally true. I was just hoping. I have a lead
on a way to order one for less than the normal price--
still spendy. But I need to get some gears going
and I also want to get my number of bikes down to
just two. Or maybe one.

That said you can get about half the gears of a Rolly
for way way less than half the price. Shimano, SRAM whathaveyou.
