Living Car Free - article about biking to work

I hadn't seen anyone else post this article so I thought I'd share what I'd found. Enjoy

I read a lot of "cycling to work is fun" type stories in my local newspaper. I think the reporters must either be bike commuters or know someone who is.

One thing I have noticed lately on television are commercials that will show bicycle when they feature a transportational scene. I think the representation is far above what we would consider the average (if you sat on your main drag, how long would you wait before a bicycle ambled by?)

I'm not sure what this all means... perhaps Exxon Mobil is about to buy Trek :)

There are so many ads these days that feature cyclists. i don't know why this is either, gerv. One I just caught showed a dorky looking cyclist taking a nasty fall. I didn't notice what product they were selling. But most ads show upscale cyclists and I think the impression is health, fun and youth.

I liked the article: very accessible for newbies, and informative without being intimidating. I think it's significant that the article appeared on the Christian Broadcasting Network's website; if even right-leaning folks are taking a hard look at cycling as serious transportation, that's a very encouraging sign.

That's better than "Huckabee 2008" on the huge rear bumper of a gigantic bus-sized diesel pickup with axles four feet off the ground. :)

Glad to see this article and especially glad to see it on a conservative Christian news site. I'm looking forward to the day when bike racks at churches will be full on Sunday mornings. Already I've been seeing a trend towards less vehicle use among some Christians and I expect to see that trend continue. At my church, a number of us are already walking and cycling more while driving less.

That's a funny one. They had a schism between the mountain bike sect and the road bike sect, and a heresy involving whether head coverings (helmets) should be worn by men, women or both. :D

Paul Strand is a sometimes Portlander. He works for CBN now, so he's often in D.C. He's one of the very few evangelical Christians (maybe the only one?) in the bike community here. One never forgets hearing about him, that's for sure...

I noticed too, on the back of one of those mainstream newsweeklies the full page ad showed mostly a scene of people playing bike polo, the small photos at the bottom showed the car they were trying to sell. If you buy the car you'll have more fun riding your bike? That's dumber than suggesting that if you buy the car you'll become more attractive to the sex of your choice or automatically become a better parent.
