I bought a Trek Anthem, not the Anthem C that has been recalled, but I noticed the label inside said it was manufactured in 2005. It normally retails for 100 dollars and was only 40. But when I noticed the date, I did some research, and I'm not sure I should keep it.

That bike helmet safety site didn't seem to like the large vents that the helmet has and thought they might be a safety issue. Also, should I be concerned that the thing has been on a shelf for two years?

Anyone have any advise? I can take it back, but it would be a shame. It looks and fits great. And what a buy...but...

They recommend replacing a helmet every 5 years. I've never heard a reasonable explanation why. Maybe they assume you'll have beat it up by then?

TMK Styrofoam is famous for taking lifetimes to degrade. So I don't understand why you'd replace a helmet based solely on age.

Anyway, $100 is a rip off. Go buy a $40 helmet.

Edit: Oops, you mentioned you only paid $40.
