Southern California - Bees

Hello. Just came back from a great ride today on San Gabriel River. My average speed was 16 miles per hour. Allot of riders and runners out today. Beautiful weather, I can’t blame them. I ride an old Peugeot P6 Carbolite bike and she rides and looks nice. I had a chance to ride a modern bike from a person I met on the trail. Very nice man and I’m sorry that I forgot your name. The bike was ALL Carbon fiber (Crank, seat stem, etc.) and the frame name was GIANT. Very nice. Especially going uphill. Light, tight, and efficient. At least ten pounds lighter than my bike. But I still love my bike. For my needs it’s cruising on level ground. Plus being a cheap ******* doesn’t help. Going up hill on my bike is a pain without a granny gear, especially up north by the dam area. But I guess I’m just a sucker for nostalgia. One thing to be aware of is if you ever ride the San Gabriel River there is a bridge you have to cross that links you to another trail that leads to Seal Beach. In that bridge are two beehives. How do I know? I had the good fortune to be stung on my head. One bee jumped on board and crawled between the vents of my helmet. That happened three weeks ago. On my way back today I was stung again just under my left eyelid. 3 millimeters to be exact. The little guy got between me and my sunglasses and decided to sting me. He danced around with his little feet and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Creepy!! First time I locked up my rear brakes and my rear pitched around. Luckily I’m not allergic to bee stings. As I am writing this I have not swelled up to badly. I guess this is a poor man’s Botox. Maybe I could charge people for bee Botox treatment to cross the bridge and I could bang on the trestle. Just be careful crossing that bridge. Does the City take care of bee issues?

- was riding along and all of a sudden felt a hot, stinging sensation on the top of my left foot...

- i look down and a yellow jacket is digging his rear end into the top of my foot, in-between the laces on my road shoes...

- it burrrrrrrrrnnnnnnneeeeedddd!

p.s. and they have killer bees down here... good way to find out if you can ride fast enough!

I think it is LA DWP that is responsible for SGRT...there should be some maintanence number to call to report this...

I was riding up Portola in Irvine a couple weeks ago.
There were bees flying around, which I didn't mind.
Then I looked at the road... As many or more dead and dying bees on the ground than
in the air. for a mile, there they were on the road.
This sudden hive death some of you may have heard of hit home that day.
Let hope the hives recover, or it will be a sad day for all of us.

Thanks for the phone number. My left eye is swollen and almost shut. I will give a call Monday. I’m sure they don’t exterminate them. Hopefully they can persuade them to find another location. Another thing I have noticed somebody has tried using Raid bug killer. If anything it just makes the bees more aggressive. I will call to ask questions. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that...maybe some benedryl...
hope it gets better....and hope you can reach someone...probalby Tuesday...they will be closed monday for the holiday...I am also looking for other numbers...

If you ride San Diego Creek all the way up to the 405 watch out for a big hive about 10' off the path at the end of the path.

I stopped for a leak at the end of the trail, right before the chain link fencing and construction equipment, and mid-wizz heard some buzzing around my head. Look up and there's a big old hive inside a tree, about 3' off the ground.

Finished my bizz and got out of there w/o a beatdown. Lucky.

oh, thanks for the warning. That could be a fatal ride for some people! speedy recovery- benadryl or some harder stuff from the doctor if otc doesn't work.

I got into a swarm of bees Saturday doing the Butterfield Double on the bike path outside of Oceanside. When I ran into then there were thousands of them, I was being hit everywhere. After I got through them I looked down to see about 50 of them stuck to me. As I was riding along I was trying to brush them off as gently as possible, but very franticly. I don’t know how, but I didn’t get stung or ran off the path.
