Road Cycling - Your Sunday Ride (February 17, 2008)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Well, tomorrow I am riding with some guy I don't even know. I guess I am breaking DGASMD's rule #1 of riding: I ride SOLO! We are supposed to go out for a 5+ hour ride, which in reality will be more as I will take him on a 110 mile loop. Of course, he doesn't know that.:D:D:D
Weather should be very nice. A repeat of today: starting in the 60's and ending close to mid 80's. No more than 10 MPH winds expected with a tail wind for the last section of it of about 50 miles. I'll post tomorrow on how it actually went.

none planned. waiting for new bike to come in and old one to sell. it will probably be about 80 degrees here in Southern CA and my patience is starting to dwindle.

From my flat, across town, across the bridge, around the Marin Headlands, and back. Should be clear and about 50F when I make my way out the door. 25 miles total, about 2400 feet of climbing. My reward for the climbing is this view:

I'm about to head out on something called a Reliability Ride. Apparently it's a big group ride (different clubs coming together) done at race pace with break aways etc, but no finish line and no prizes for "winning". So really, its practice for the upcoming season - should be fun...

We're looking to do a metric century with part of the ride being what the TofC rides on Tuesday. If we're feeling feisty we'll tack on a few more miles. About 3100 ft. of climbing with just the metric; not much more if we ride the extra loop. We'll be on the tandem -- our first TT is a month away and we need the practice.
A short fast loop from my house, quite good fun, but only had 40 mins so could only do 7 miles

Hey,
Maybe fast for him. Plus dunno the terrain. I have a short loop that I do when I don't have much time. bout 8.5 miles and takes me 36-38min. But it also has around 950' of climbing over the 8 miles so not exactly flat.

No riding today as the wind is a steady 25mph with gusts that look to knock trees down. Trudging along at 5 mph is no fun. So, today we'll get the trainer in front of the tv and watch the 1999 TdF.

I am in pain. A lot of it.

I am very jeaalous of all of you who could ride today. There is ice about two inches thick on my driveway with freezing rain chaning to a half foot more of snow on the already four-foot-high piles. I'm doomed to the trainer while watching some of the Daytona 500 on TV later, to be followed by VERSUS (4:00 central time don't forget) and the ToC.

...tan line.....a faded memory for me!
nomnomnom.....some tex-mex after that ride today too!
Making tacos for dinner tonight here.
Did my usual 40 miles today. Would have broken an overall average had it not been for the headwind on the return leg.
Riding here in coastal Florida means one heads out either north or south and returns either south or north. Sure can be windy this time of year.
dgasmd, how was your ride with Fred?

Short 16 mile hill ride. 15.3mph average with a stiff headwind for a good part of the out and back ride. Not sure how much climbing there was.
Is there a ways to calculate total climbing on an online route maker? I'd just like to know how much there is on the rides that I do.

today started off with a heavy fog and frost(ireland) but the sun came out an temperatures rose a bit higher there was about 16 of us in a group ride, i done about 60 miles had to go home early for work :(
I'm doing a slow (well, not too slow) 65-miler as part of my new training regimen. More distance, less intensity, coupled with an intense ride (hill repeats) in the middle of the week. Leaving in about 30 mintues. It's a gorgeous day and it will be above 70 degrees F by the time my ride is done.

An hour of intervals with some pretty killer wind on the TT bike. First ride with my new Selle SMP saddle and I have to say I'm very impressed. It's amazing being able to ride an hour in the aero position and not have to re-adjust the cash and prizes once or have any discomfort at all in that department.
Did 40 miles with the group.
First 20, sunny, calm wind, 35 degrees. Perfect.
Last 20, clouds, dark, windy, raw. Ugly.

Did it yesterday 7:30 -9:30 -- 37 miles Then to daughter soccer tournament. Then in the evening 4:45 to 6. 21 miles... Some climbing both times and I caught up to a guy in a nice Colnago Ti uphill. Man those Colnagos are nice! Me like!
Today the monster truck show is in town and I am bringing my son and friend. Barn work (as in mucking out horse ****) in the AM (but I have wireless and surfing everytime I take a break!), Heading out for the truck show and get my redkneck game on! It's too bad cause the weather is perfect today! Wasn't yesterday.

63 miles in Fort Bend County, TX... easily the most beautiful day in the Houston-area thus far in 2008. The wind was pretty stiff... I hit 12 miles an hour average on one 4 mile stretch straight into the wind, but on the return I was cruising at 28, so it was worth it.

i did ~12 miles today. sub one mile to the gym, same back. 5.5 to where i go to school to check the route...and 5.5 back. it took me like 30 min to get there and 40 back because there was a little more climbing.
I'm in terrible shape, don't ride regularly, and pretty much just bought my first bike since having a mountain bike when i was 16. so i havent ridden any distance to speak of in about 5 years. I know, i'm a *****, but i want to enjoy this as a hobby and save on gas.

Finally took time out to see what river road by the New Jersey cliff-side was like. Nice scenery with all the waterfalls and having a rockface wall hovering nearby. I was surprised to find that it was pretty much empty until the end of the road where a climb begins. Decided to head back after doing the climb cause I could've sworn I saw a sign at the rest stop at the top that read "Beware of Pcad: he will eat your fred fenders and crush your soul beyond this point".
Total mileage: 50-60miles, 4 hours.

I've been ridding for 1 month this week, my 3rd ride (not counting going out for sprints after work b/c i'm too anxious to wait for the weekend)...
I went 40 miles in Atlanta, GA, from the MLK memorial downtown, out to Stone Mountian (15mi), around the mountian twice (10mi), and back to my starting point (15mi), 2hr 25min. 60F
I looked up local bike trails and just took 1. I passed within 5 miles of my house at one point, I was so pissed I drove to the start of the trail and rode the whole thing, vs. just hitting the road from my driveway and making my own trail. I'm a newb u live and u learn I guess.
Saturday: took the SART for the first time in years. 51 miles and warm & lighty wind heading up the river and, then the usual windblown bit of bizness on the way home. Good day.
Sunday: with GF pulling me for the first 10 mi. (legs beat to hell from yesterday) we head up PCH to Long Beach. Stretching and downing enough gel/liquid for a family of four, I finally get it rolling and we cruise back home with a decent onshore breeze pushing us. 50 miles.
Most back-to-back mileage days this goat has done in a long time.
Well, today was a good day overall, but funny in a sense. First of, went today for 115 miles. About 6+ hours. Had about 40 miles of headwind at about 15-20 MPH that was kicking my butt royally. However, nice side/tail wind on the way back for another 40 miles. For the first time I had a cramp. I had heard lots of people talk about it, but I have to tell you that chit hurts like a mother f.... Had been drinking quite well, ate appropriately, and it was on the way back with the tail wind moving pretty well, so I was not even doing a ton of effort when it happened. I stopped for a couple of minutes and it went away. I can still feel pain in my thigh when I walk. Did I mentioned how much that $hit hurts?
Like I said in the first post, I broke DGASMD's rule #1, and I rode with someone else today. A guy that contacted me via the local club's email. He is training for an ironman triathlon and wanted to fit in a very long ride. Well, not only did I break rule #1, but when I arrived to meet the guy, I notice he has a little top tube Fredilicious bag like the one I posted last week. He also has a pack of Fig Newtons sticking out of his rear pocket. What was his name? Fred!!!! Really, that is his name. However, the major redeeming point here was that he has a SRM powermeter in his bike.I mean, those things are so sweet. I must say I had a great time riding with this guy. Very nice, took his time at the front, and not once complained about anything. Maybe I should try this more often by writing to DGASMD's country and asking for an ammendment to Rule #1. We'll see.
Patentcad, please save me..............

50 miles in 36-38 degree temps - toes got a bit cold (saran wrap isn't a very good insulator). My back/hip on the right side was destroyed during the ride, so apparently this problem isn't going anway. Ugh.

Having finally finished the mechanical modifications on my '69 Magneet Sprint (set up for touring, mudguards, front bag, rear rack, near cyclocross tyres) I got it out this morning for the final test run. Did 30 miles in two hours (on my long haul bikes, that's moving for me) and was really in the mood to add another hour or hour and a half, but the predicted rainstorms moved in two hours early. A wet final five miles home, however it was a nice, warm 50 degree day. Spent a hour in the shop, grabbed lunch and settled in for the ToC.
Now that both touring bikes are ready for the season, it's time to get the play bikes out again.

Just 20 mile recovery ride this morning.
I just got back from the beach for the weekend. Yesterday I took a leisurely ride from Vilano Beach to American Beach and back (100 miles). I started at 7:30 am and got back at 1:10 pm. Taking the ferry both ways across the river at Mayport sure adds a lot of time to the ride (about 30 minutes for me)! Other than the ferry I stopped for a few minutes to take some pictures from the Fort George Island/Little Talbot Island bridge and also stopped near the end at the "Gate" store to get a Coke. I was just about out of water, too.
I saw a huge number of cyclists out. The first huge group was headed south on Ponte Verda Blvd just before it gets to A1A. I second group caught up to me heading south on A1A on the northern outskirts of Jax Beach and then turned off into a convenience store parking lot.
Most of the ride was pleasant enough, but I didn't care much for riding on Amelia Island. It is pretty, but there is no shoulder for almost all that I rode and when there was a shoulder it was so bumpy as to be nearly useless.
Thanks to Merlinextraligh for posting about this route a while back. It's too bad that Toporoute has "lost" his route in a server crash. I'm sure that he had a better way through Jax Beach than 3rd and Atlantic Ave. That was OK, but I didn't notice any other cyclists taking that route.

Nice day in Austin today, about 70F and no wind...marathon route kept me from going on the group ride (not sure they went off today)...so, put on a new chain and then realized I needed a new cassette as well...after a trip to the trusty bike store, made my way on a 20 mile ride...having no wind was wonderful.

Now go down the back way and add P-loop. :D
What, exactly, is this back way and P-loop? I ride up Conzelman Road to Hawk Hill, continue 'down' from there, and loop around to Bunker Road, past the hostel and around the old route that is closed to autos, and then back up Bunker, and then turn right on McCullough Road to Conzelman Road [avoiding that nasty tunnel]. Is that the P-loop? This ride is getting easier and easier for me [just started cycling last year], so I will be getting ready to expand my 'loop' to include some of the challenges of Mt Tam, this year [in prep for the Grizzly Peak Century in May].
