How? :
My son has just started a 2 yr course at our local senior secondary school, where they build and race c/f recumbents in a energy challenge comp, (They have won it a number of times against nationwide competitors). The first year involves making a prototype from steel then testing it till they've perfected it, then year two moves on to making it in c/f.
My son is considering as a project in his second year of making a c/f R20 type frame with some nice upgrades, of course....like a rear end that will take a 9 speed hub, provision for rear and front derailliuers and bidon holders, slighty longer top bar, c/f forks, better brake bridge for road callipers etc etc.
The school has even in the past made c/f rims, so that's not out of the question, and I think most of the cost might be covered by them.....so all we have to do is work out what components we want..I'm thinkin' 9 speed STI Ultegra or c/f Durace set up with 60/50 chainrings and 451 rims.

Time will tell if this actually happens, but stranger things have, so stay tuned....... ;)

That's very sophisticated technology for school craft lessons Stevegor. I'd love to get myself on a course like that. Is 57 too old to sign up? When I was at school we made screwdrivers, egg racks, paint scrapers and once I made a small engineering vice which I cast in aluminium and machined. The star student of the class was allowed to make an oscillating steam engine. A recumbent bike would have been a real motivator for us.

Yes EvilV, they're a very dedicated group and my 16 yr old son wants to be a mechanical engineer, so all this is very good training for the future. He's been stripping motorcycle engines for the past few years and rebuilding them, and he's good at electronics as well........he didn't get any of this from me, I'm a clutz..all I know how to do is ride.

Thats sounds like a heap of fun - in terms of a course to take and a bike to ride at the end of it. Do indeed keep us posted! :)

Heh heh, I see an ulterior motive...

"My son, why don't you build a CF R20, my son, that will give you heaps of experience, my son. Uh, dude."

* then I can ride it, don't you know... *

I suggest you post in the Framebuilders section.

If anyone has actually done a home-made CF frame, it's gonna be someone in there.
