Nice forum you've got going here!
I've recently resurrected a 1985 Miyata Three-Ten road bike as my daily commuter. I'd like to try it as a fixed gear, but since I've never ridden fixed before I'd like to try it as cheaply as possible.
Unfortunately, the original rear wheel is no good, as the rim has a serious dent in it.
Can anyone tell me who sells an inexpensive, pre-built rear wheel for getting started? I also ride it quite a lot in crappy weather, so that's the other reason I'd like to keep it cheap
BTW, This was my first real road bike (after BMX) that my father bought me when I was 16. It had spent about 14 years being stored in my father-in-law's barn. Its been a blast bringing it back to life.
Thanks
Kevin
Kevin,
Congrats on bringing the bike back. Sounds like a fun project. I recently bought teh Quality Bike Products wheel like this one from Harris Cyclery:

WE1220 $119.95
"QBP makes these special for us. These use the Suzue basic flip/flop fixed/free hub, 36 DT stainless double-butted spokes and Mavic MA3 rim $119.95."
Shop around the net or your LBS and you might even find it cheaper (I've seen it as low as $89). So far I love it.
Good luck. Fixed is fun.
what's the spacing on the frame? if it's 130, van dessel sells a flip flop rear wheel in 130mm spacing for $89.

Those Van Dessel wheels look pretty nice.
I'm not sure if the spacing on the Miyata is 120 or 126 (I'll measure tonight), but I currently have a Veloce/MA3 wedged in there with a 9-speed cassette and seems ok though it was a tight fit.
What are the limits for flexing a rear triangle? If it's 120 will it be ok with a 130 Van Dessel rear?
thanks for all the replys,
Kevin
it depends on what the frame is made out of. if its steel then it can be coldset, or bent. if its aluminum then not so much. if a campy 9 speed sorta fits you can likely get the van-d's to fit.

Hey, if you just need a rear wheel can sell you the one that came off my pista. It has a Bianchi Flip flop hub and CXP22. Nice stiff wheel, I only used for a month for basic road rides.
35 bucks plus shipping? I'm in SC btw.

$35 plus shipping sounds great to me. I'm assuming it's spaced at 120, right?
Anyways, I'll email you off list to set up the details.
Dang, this is a great message board!

h8r- Does that Van Dessel wheel include the hub and cog at 85$?
I'm new to this.
The wheel has to include the hub, but it does not mention a cog included so I would assume one is not included.
I think it includes a cog but not a freewheel on the other side. the hubset includes a cog so the built wheel(set) probably does too. theres a vd hubset on ebay right now if anyones looking for them.

This is similiar to what I got, but I had some bad problems with the cog and lock ring. It may have to do with my wieght (I'm at 195lbs at that time)... or the bad durace set up on the cog itself. But, just some info, FWIW.
