I recently moved to Long Beach and am looking for a cycling club. I understand there are 2 clubs in town, Lightning Velo and Velo Allegro. Can anyone describe any differences between these 2 clubs, if there are any? Is one club better than the other for non hard-core, beginner-low intermediate riders?

I'm looking for a casual club that invites all levels of riders, and offers recreational, non-hard core rides. Thanks.

Hi cbears,

Funny you should ask. ;) I'm the President of Lightning Velo. Therefore, you are now the recipient of free, blatant self-promotion. :D

Seriously, both clubs are good, long established organizations. The main difference, from my pointed perspective, is that Lightning Velo tries to cater more to beginning riders and families. Velo Allegro has more of a racing bent. Also, our Group B rides have a no drop policy. There aren't many clubs in SoCal that ride that way.

I would say that you should give both clubs a try to see what you think. The link to the new and improved Lightning Velo web site in in my sig.

Feel free to ask me further questions.

Oh, the other key difference is that our cycling kit is pink and blue (and black and white). :)

Thank you for the information Cleave. I will check out both clubs, though it sounds like lightning velo may be more appropriate for me.

"Almost" every time I run into Velo Allegro as a group they are A-holes (it's not just me that has this opinion of them). If your an a-hole and ride like an a-hole then you may want to join them, if not then I would suggest Lightning Velo.
