Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What's this wild five spoked wheel?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, I've searched the forum and lots of other resources to no (definite) avail. How do Aerospoke's track hubs hold up to street riding? Street riding without a brake. Like, you know, emergency leg-over skid stops (no handed of course). Do the hubs strip or come loose from the wheel? I've always said they suck for a back wheel, but without any real reasoning.

I've told this story before, but I was with my girlfriend in Portland for a job interview/vacation a few months ago. She left to go meet her potential employer, and I went off on my own to go walk around.

About twenty minutes after she left, my phone rang, and it's her. She says "I just saw a bike with five spokes and they were all pink, and so I thought I'd call and tell you about it."

they suck cause they are heavy and flexy. not good for wheels.

Charles Mason is for whom the Mason-Dixon line was named. I don't think he was a hippie ginger with a giant beard, though.

The reason they're no good for a back wheel is twofold: first, bikes just don't work without at least ONE velocity deep-v rim, for reasons largely unknown. Second, the rider needs to have at least one spoke-card storage area...you know, to show how hip they are.

I have a set. The rear hub used to slip inside the shell due to the design but that's been fixed now thanks to JB Weld. Since the issue has been addressed I don't think it's a problem with the rears anymore. I really like them as wheels. They ARE VERY HEAVY compared to traditional wheels, but I don't mind since I am a heavy rider (180lbs) and need a strong wheel (I cracked a Mavic OP). For those who really complain about the weight, I think they may be lighter/smaller riders so the weight is much more noticeable. They take off ride vibrations but that can account to the flex of the wheel. They are flexy when sprinting, but why does that matter when riding in the streets, because sprinting is not your main priority. The rotational mass makes it easier to keep speed but then again, in the streets you're always having to change speed so it makes it stupid to have them. So why get them? If you think they are cool looking (which I think they are) and want a strong wheel then go for them. If you care about the performance aspect, just pass because they'll only make you bitter.
You may want to lower your gearing because starting and stopping is noticeably more difficult
Here's how I had em on me C'dale (which is sold now :( )

I'm 180# as well, but never considered myself clyde material cuz I'm 6'4" and thin. So that said I built up a 32 hole Aerohead that I took on a 5 mile round trip daily commute for a year. Only very minor truing ever needed. BTW, this was in Seattle on their s**t a** roads; hopped curbs, hit cars (only lightly,) and all that.

To the wheels, though, 180 lbs is 180 lbs, whether you're 6'4" or 4'6".

And more recently, right facing swastika = Nazi party. Why would you expect Westerners to associate the swastika as an obscure symbol of a foreign religion when most of our grandfathers (and some of out fathers) fought again that very symbol in WWII?
