:( I'm in nyc. Yesterday I lost my bike. I don't know how the thieft get the bike. I was in the library, then didn't see it when I came out.
Is there anything I can do to get it back?

If you have the serial number off of it, call the police and have a stolen bike report taken. All bikes can be entered into the national law enforcement computer at any value. If any officer comes across it and runs the serial number you will get it back.

what if I don't? It's a new bike. I just bought it like 8 days.

Call the police and give a description of the bike anyway. It's unlikely you'll see it again (I never saw mine again after it got stolen back in May), but it's worth a try anyway.

What Chris said and, if you bought it from a bike shop, go there they may have your serial number. I advise everyone on this board to take the time to write down a full and very extensive discription of your bike to incude any numbers on your bike. My front suspension has it's own serial number. But yes call the police and report it as soon as possible. If you live in NY they are open 24-7-365 and will contact you tonigt if needed.

I got the serial# from the receipt.
Is it possible to get the bike back?

Just so you know, I work for a police department in Arizona. I'm not going to lie to you. You will probably never see your bike again. But on the off chance that a police officer sees your bike and has heard about the theft you may. I live in a small town and we get bikes back quite often but in a place like NY, good luck. I do recomend you report it though. It could be something as simple as a one time thief or a major bike ring (they do exist) and the police department may be on their trail. Good luck though and do call.

What # should I call?
911? 119?
Is it possible that the thief change the serial #?

Another idea -- check a few local pawn shops in your area. Someone might have sold it to pay for a drug habit, although turning up nearby is a long shot. If it did turn up, you'd just have to prove it was yours (the description you give to the police could help in such a situation) and you should get it back. Still, as I said, it's a long shot.

If your bike is stolen in New York City, it's LOOOOOOG gone. You can check every now and then on Craigs list to see if someone is selling it. Next time, buy the Kryptonite New York 3000

Sorry I got back so late. Do Not Call 911, it is not an emergency since it's delayed. Look in your phone and find the non emergency number.

did you buy the bike with a credit card? if so you it may have something where you could get re-imbursed.

Basic color, what type of bike, brand, how many speeds, and serial number is all you need. Call it in just so you have record.

Thanks Lamajo25...
My dad bought that bike, so I don't really know stuff about it.
Tomorrow I'll try to go to that bike store to see if it has another one of it, so I can write down the informations.

That's a good idea. This time as soon as you get home write all info down about your bike.

I got those info now.
My dad told me to give up. He's gonna buy another one. But I don't want to.
Should I do so?
If not, what # should I call?
