Just found an old Murray X12 12 speed that someone was throwing out. The frame is in decent shape and fixed up could be a good bike for rainy weather. I think it is from 1984 as it has a decal on it saying it is the official bicycle supplier of the 1984 Olympics.

Is this bike worth fixing up? Does anybody know about murray bikes?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Murray is in the same class as Huffy. It's not worth putting a lot of money into, but for your intended usage it will be a good bike.

Mininmum fixup for the bike would include change of brake pads, as most likely the pads will be worn and rock hard after 19-20yrs. The cables should be pulled and checked for fraying and rust, the housings are probably toast so they should probably be replaced also. If you have the tools and inclination taking the headset, bottom bracket and wheel hubs apart for inspection and lube would be a good idea. This has probably never been done. Pedals also.
If the drive train doesn't skip or jerk it is probably not worn out, assuming the chain is not a mass of rust. I would leave it alone except for cleaning and lubing. If any of these parts beyond cables, housing and pads need replacement then you rapidly get into the point of no return, unless you really have a use for the bike. Saddle may be questionable and of course bar tape.

Every bicycle should have a loving owner to take care of it- even department store bikes. Good on you for saving this one.

Ask in the vintage forum.
I seem to remember Murray making a pretty nice bike to go with the ones they built for the Olympics.
If it is a twelve speed from 1984, there is a chance it is a good quality bike. Is there a tubing logo on it? It would say Reynolds or Columbus

Probably just worth $.05/lb for scrap steel.

We just had one in the store today, the same one I remembered seeing a while back. Columbus tubing, sewups, and a Campy drivetrain.
