Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - what tire's best for skid stopping?

i don't mean like best for your skid competitions, but for stopping.
i went through a 14 dollar tire in about a week. i was kinda bombing hills a lot for fun, but i didin't think it would go that easily. i use the same tire for the front on another bike and it holds air fine, not sure why it failed that one day.

but anyways, i ride a 23mm bontrager hardcase, which seems to be the only thing worth spending 35 dollars on. i don't skid stop for fun too much anymore, but i stil have yet to see much wear in the past three months on it.

anyone ride cheaper tires that can hold up pretty well?

i use search. they seem to last a while. you can get them at nashbar for cheappppp cheappppp cheapppp.

Don't forget to check your gear ratio. If you're running a 48/16, you only have one skid patch, making your tire wear out faster. More skid patches = more even wear.

As someone who has also opened this can of worms on this forum, I'm willing to share my insight...I haven't tried the usual suspects (gatorskins, everwears etc) but I have had good luck with most anything that says 'hard-case' or 'thorn resistant.' Go to LBS and feel the durometer and thickness of various tires. My $30 Buttranger tire ('hard-case') has lasted 6+ times longer than the $10 version. Not sure where the sweet-spot on the price-durability curve is, but it's certainly above $30.

Oh, and +1 on the gear ratios. Makes a big difference. If you can't get yourself up to the magic 16 skid spot number, at least be really anal about rotating your tire in relation to your cranks regularly.

I just put that there so that when I did a find on the page I would at least see the word "brake" and or its plural counterpart "brakes" came up once on this post. For sanity reasons. Not trying to stir the pot, just trying to keep from mentally imploding.

Might be hard to find local, definetly online though. If you cant wait just get whatever you can get at ur LBS that is cheap with decent amount of tread. If your caching tires once a week its not gonna matter how nice or crappy of a tire ur riding on.

These things do last forever. You need a couple thick steel tire levers about 3 feet long to get them off though.

I actually have changed these tires before, you'll also need a a bead hammer to break the seal.

Those tires are great, but you will need canti's or Vs for braking.

Just buy one of those hard-walled orange tires that you use on a trainer. Those things will last forever.

yeah i ride brakeless, and enjoy it very much. no one every believes anyone when they say they trust the skid stop more than a hand brake but i do.

I have found that the best tire to use for stopping rather than skidding is the one mounted in my to the wheel on my fork.

ive had a vittoria randonneur 700x28 on for like three months with about 300 miles on it and its still really nice. not that i skid in order to stop a ton, i usually slow down gradually if i can help it, but yeah that tire is awesome. got two for 40 bucks on ebay.
