Yes, but.......it was an Olympic distance tri and I competed in the team competition, kinda obvious that I rode the bike leg. What a blast it was. Our swimmer was great, I had a fast ride but our runner was slooooow and we still came in 4th out of 40 teams. Not too bad for a group of tri virgins.
I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about it just to get a taste of the event. Although finding a swimmer is harder then finding a runner.

I chose the fork option, but let me just state that I admire you little swimmer/runner/rider nuts....er....folks. :D

A sharp, clean fork please. ;) :D

Hell, I'd use a rusty one before I'd sign up for a triathlon. :p

I don't think it's worth losing an eye over but it's never appealed to my imagination...

I finished a triathlon that was in actuality turned into a duathlon. It was in Huntington Beach years back, and the ocean was considered to polluted on the day of the race, so they changed it into a run-bike-run. Gotta tell ya, I was saddened and the legs got no rest. It was still a good experience. I'm also friends with several Ironman completers from Arizona...does that count? :)

The challenge has always appealed to me. But, I'm with efficiency--running hurts! er...sucks!

Why Run when you can Bike instead?

I am a lousy swimmer, ran cross-country in high school loved it. Tried running again in my 30's and hated it.

It's a good excuse to buy a new bike, and all sorts of other new toys :D

Running to me is the best aerobic workout I can get in the least amount of time. I suck at swimming, but I am looking at that as just another challenge.

Only if I get to count that I do swim workouts on one day, treadmill on another and bike on yet others!

look at an old bike racer who still rides- they're smooth, fluid, graceful on the bike. now find an old runner- they shuffle along dragging their broken down feet and legs looking like quazimodo with or without the hump.

no thanks- i'll pass, there's quicker and more fun ways too cripple oneself

I can swim very well (see my job) and i can bike pretty well, i can also run pretty good too..however...combine the three together and i would rather punch my grandmother in the face than participate.

That's what duathlons are for (I know you can ride!)...

Umm...not the older runners I know!! I know some wickedly fast old guys that have been running for 30+ years that look incredibly light on their feet. One of the people that joined the first part of my ride Sunday was a 65 year old guy that had run 21 miles the day before (he's training for the Boston Marathon).

The reason I first started cycling (and got my mtb) was because I saw a (2-day?) ironman competition on TV... some island in the Mediterranean (I think it is Cypress?).

So yeah, I plan to do it some day... after I learn how to swim! :D :p

Why anyone would get off a perfectly good bicycle to run or swim is beyond me...

I would be willing to do the bike leg in a sprint relay if two other people were bloody desparate.

Dave, if you saw the women who show up at my tri club's meetings, you would never ask that question.

My original fitness goal was to complete a tri so I went out and bought a bike. I immediately took to riding and have rejected running and swimming completely. I'd still like to give a go at a sprint distance tri someday though.

umd
02-19-08, 01:10 PM
I chose the fork option, but "I may be forced to someday" would probably be more appropriate. Kim wants me to do an Ironman with her, and has made it a condition of buying a TT bike. With that consideration, I decided that there is no point to buying a TT bike until I am cat 3...

I should add that I've never run more than a 5K (poorly) and can't swim more than a lap of a pool to save my life. Ok, maybe to save my life.

Oh... I'd NEED a TT bike to do a tri? Hehehe... :D

I'm not sure if that was directed at my comment but it made me realize what I wrote was probably confusing. I don't want to get a TT bike to do tris, I want a TT bike for TTs in stage races. Kim won't let me get one unless I do the tri with her. Ironman everyone starts at the same time, and she figures I can make up on the bike leg whatever time I lose to her in the swim, and then we would be together for the run. I'd rather poke my eyes out with a fork than do an tri, let alone an Ironman, so I'll wait as long as possible to get the TT bike... but as a cat 3, GC results count so the TT would actually be meaningful (for more than just pride), and I would need a TT bike for any chance of decent results.

I'm actually in a swimming class now and I have really seen some great results over the past 7 weeks. With a little practice, good form, efficient technique, and proper breathing can make swimming so easy. I started out in the kiddie pool and now swim a thousand meters without any problems.

You should take a class--really (assuming you're already not a really good swimmer). The swimming in a tri is the easy part...it's all about momentum and conserved energy.

I did the .9 mile swim, 26 mile bike and i think 10k run. It was in college when I supported myself lifeguarding and teaching swim lesson. The swimming and biking were easy :)but running was horrible.:( I beat some of the men out of the ocean, but fell behind with the running. Now like people said previously I think running sucks. I guess I should grab a fork too. You couldn't pay me to do it again. I guess I was young and impressionable back then.:p

Oh, I do see them, just not all in the same room at the same time. At least not in real life.

That would be interesting! Quick question: I wouldn't have to wear a Speedo or anything, would I? I wouldn't want it to turn out like that time in junior high...

I have done the Bonelli Triathlon a couple of times. Never cared much for the swimming part of it. best advice I ever received was that good swimmers swim over you not around you.

The only thing I really hated was the washing machine starts. It's one thing to do long distance swims in a quiet pool or cove... quite another to do it while being kicked/hit in the face, pushed under or rolled under waves next to hundreds of your closest friends.

That said, I may do it again some day if I ever find the time to train for all three disciplines...

That's what my college aged daughter does.

It's nice when she goes riding with me, she's CPR certified...currently. ;) :D

My Tri Club runs a beginner open water swim each week March-Oct, and one thing they did with us was make us all get close at the start of the set so we could get used to the jostling about. Which was especially nice when the group was mostly women training for Mission Bay and the Subaru Women's tri's :D
