Road Bike Racing - Team Columbus Races Banned by OCA...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Word is, Ohio Cycling Association is not approving any more of Team Columbus Races until the promoter complies with USA Cycling rules.

Team Columbus used to put on races back in the 80's when I lived in West Virginia. Sounds like things have gone downhill.
Ohio Valley is putting on a pretty good spring series. That's the races that I plan on doing. I'll grab the popcorn and watch what happens with the Team Columbus thing. Last year I only did one of his races, the state crit championship. There were some screwy things that went on. This year my team got that race, it will be Tour d Burg.
Weird. Tyler bucking the system.
But what's that mean? Kirk will tell everyone to boycott the races? I'm not sure OCA really has a say in permits as long as USA Cycling has already issued them(edit, read my follow up post #8).
So will Tym's races still be approved for upgrade points?

If this is true it will greatly change my schedule and plans. Has this been confirmed or is it just hearsay?
I'm going to try and call Kirk to see what's up.
From Kirk Albers, head of OCA. He basically told me that they are not allowing Tyler's Races under USA Cycling license from here on out. Basically the job of the OCA is, in partnership with USAC "to "govern" cycling in Ohio through the approval of race permits, applications, assigning officials, approving category changes, and putting
together a race schedule". If Tyler won't follow the guidelines set by USAC, they won't issue him permits. Plain and simple.
So sounds like the races will not count if they go on, until they reach an agreement or Tym budges and replaces his category system with USAC's. The word is that your USAC license could be yanked if you participate in a Tyler race too, so be careful.
These sites have info on sanctioned races as of right now. More are coming but have not received the permit yet(don't worry, there will be plenty of racing).

And the other thing I don't get: This is supposedly over the A/B/C/D categories, yet the race results Tym posted for Frosty Toes are 1-3, 3/4, 4/5, etc. Why can't he just agree to continue to do this?
I've talked to four people at USAC to find out what is going on as far as points. They are going to do some research and get back to me. As soon as I find out something I'll post it.
Well, the problem is that with us(Ohioans), the points upgrade goes through OCA.
Hmmm, who do my upgrades go through?

If you're in WV, might be MABRA:

First rule of racing: read the rules.
What you do after that is up to you.

Don't see much information on their website (http://www.mabra.org/index.php). They haven't even updated the points system, there is no 2008 schedule, and there doesn't seem to be any contact information either. Oh well, guess I'll wait until I hear back from USAC.
When you upgraded from 5-4, who sent you your congrats email?
I can't remember her name, she isn't with them anymore though. I'll wait for USAC to call me back, if they don't I'll figure out who to contact.
Then it probably wasn't Ohio. Was Mike H. out of Indy, and now Jeff Aufdencamp from Columbus.

That's a pretty bold statement from whoever said that. I would like to see them try that. If it happened, I would start buying cat 5 one day licenses under the name Hugh J. Johnson or Seymore Butts.
EDIT - or I'll just say screw USAC and race ABR or any unlicensed races.
People that mouth off with threats like that should be outed and reported, especially if they think they represent USA Cycling.
Bet it was/is this guy:

I'm not sure legally, but it came from the highest of the high in Ohio Cycling.
I'm not so sure this is really that bad of a thing. Everyone always *****es about his races and payouts, swears they'll never do another Tyler race, and then come March, they're right there at the line, still *****ing. Maybe this will make him change up the attitude a little.

The high and mighty can put in for my banning right after the Mid Ohio race.

So I know....How do I tell a Tyler race from a non-Tyler race? Remember...I am new around here :)

Just an update, USAC never called me back about this. I e-mailed Tym Tyler to ask him what was going on, no reply from him either. I just e-mailed Randy Inglis to see if he can tell me anything. It would be nice to get a straight answer. It's hard enough making the long trips every weekend to race, it wouldn't make much sense to spend all that time and money if the races don't count towards an upgrade.

You mean racing bikes for the fun of it doesn't count? :p

Sure it does, but at this time I can benefit just as much from hard training rides around here without having to set in a car for six hours or longer.
Tym got back to me, looks like his races still count so I'll be going this weekend.

According to usacycling.org schedule for Ohio (https://www.usacycling.org/events/index.php?state=OH&race=Road&fyear=2008&rrfilter=all) the only Team Columbus race with a permit was Frostie Toes (last week).

I emailed an unbiased source, a USAC official, to see his thoughts on whether it's OCA or USAC that's boycotting. The other thing to look at is if a lot of the Ohio contingent doesn't show up, the upgrade points according to the new rules won't be there(you'll have to look, I forget what the rules say).

Alright as an update. Cards will NOT be suspended for racing in Tyler's races, but until he meets the issues with OCA and USAC, his races will not be sanctioned and therefore, NOT count towards upgrade points.

I just Emailed Tym questioning about this. I will let you know what if anything he says......

Saw that coming a mile away. Don't think USAC could afford the lawsuit. I wonder who started that rumor anyway.
hmm.........usacycling just listed a Team Columbus race for this weekend, with a permit number. Maybe they've patched things up.

Tym and I emailed back and forth this morning. Here is what I asked him:
"I heard a rumor that until farther notice that the points from your races will not apply towards USAC upgrades. Can you shed any light on this? "
His answer was......
"No they are good, I sent them to the usacycling on monday. were did you here that rumor?
tym"
I sent him a link to this thread so maybe he will personally chime in....

Tym read the thread and here is what he sent me. He asked me to post this for him.
"I don't know what to think of that stuff, all I know is that i'm up to date with the fees to usacycling, I have sent all my permits apps to them, I have received approved permits back, the points and results have been sent to usac and kirk from the first race, and I have submitted the schedule to kirk, and he approved it. Please go on the forum and pass this on. I don't know what else to do? But if it is clear and the roads are clear we are racing this weekend and every weekend from now through september 1st. Tym" End Quote.
I plan on running his races till I see a reason not to.....
