Hello All,
I am looking for advice on a first social/group/event ride for daughter and dad on a tandem. I was thinking of the avenue of the oaks, but there is a fair amount of climbing. Looking for a 50km / 30m ride.
How many people generally turn up?
is it a hammerfest or a more of a social ride?
Is there a better first group ride to take an 8 year old (and overweight underexercised dad) on?
Many thanks,
Mike

I've done the San Diego Century; it was pretty good. Like most other organized century, it's not really a hammerfest but a ride-at-your-pace kind of thing.
If you want to do 30 miles ride in a group, you can also join club rides as well. The SDBC one in La Jolla area is too far for you, but their Saturday social (C-/D4) ride is about 27 miles. There should be equivalent club rides in your area.

You two might like to go the the Glen Ivy Hot Springs. The Club Mud area would be fun for a young enough girl or any boy. It is on a nice (to me) back road running from Corona south past Lake Elsinore and pass the Rainbow Pass road.

Hi Mike,
Try calling Dennis at Redhawk Bicycles over on 79 (951) 302-8567. He's the owner and they (he and JanB who posts here on Bikeforums) do weekend rides from the shop (its down past Home Depot, near KFC on the KFC side) that are not hammerfests. I know they ride a tandem too on many of the rides and I don't think they are doing super long distances at this time.
If you talk to Dennis, tell him Tracy (now in NorCal) says HI!!!

very cool... yes, he is awesome! I will continue to buy my big ticket items from him even though it involves driving down from NorCal... I loved hanging out in the shop!

Many thanks Grumpy,

The Tour de Sewer sounds like it would fit your needs, there are a bunch of different distances laid out to choose from, with the most being only a metric century. There's only one good climb and I don't think it's included in the shorter distance rides.
Just saw this post and I put the rides together out of Red Hawk Bicycles in Temecula. We do sometimes have a couple of tandems with us and we usually have 2 options of about 20 or 30 mile routes. We sometimes stop for donuts or Starbucks. Casual, no drop ride. Let me know if you want more info.

Hello Jan,
I think we have met - in the shop, are you Dennis' sister? I am aware of the rides you put together, but I seem to recall it involves getting up really early!! Seriously, we are just starting out and haven't ventured out much yet. The last few weekends we have tried to get out between the rain and do a loop from the park in RedHawk.
I was looking for an `event' to take my 8 year old daughter on so she can get a Tshirt or Jersey - something like 50km so that she can have some fun and feel that she has acheived something. We have been planning to do the Avenue of the Oaks (slowly) but we will both have to do some work between now and then before we hit Couser Canyon. Tour de Sewer reviews have not been all that positive but it seems an easier ride. Will pm you for more info and take this off line.
thanks
mike

Don't worry. You'll make up for any lost time going down hill. ;)
