Okay guys, how the heck do you keep your ears from freezing. I rode home last night in very low 60's weather. That's pretty cold for my taste. When I got home the inner part of my ears were so cold that they hurt. What do you use to keep them warm?

I used to live in NY and as long as the temp was above 20 degrees and there was no ice or snow on the road I would ride. What I did was get a balaclava that I could put under the helmet and cover my ears and neck. This pretty much solved that problem. If its only your ears bothering you get a ear muff like skiers use.

I have a performance cool max headband I wear when it gets chilly out

There are several headbands and head covers designed to fit under or with your helmet. PearlIzumi, Salsa, Garneau(I think)

For low 60s, the suggested coolmax headbands should more than do the trick.

I use a headwrap a bit like this one (http://pricepoint.com/product2090.html) through most of the year. My main issue is sweat running off my shortly-cropped noggin during the summer, and a slightly cold head during the cooler months. I don't normally have a problem with my ears feeling cold until it drops down below 35 or so, when I switch to one of the beanie-style training hats.

Hey thanks guys. Booyah you've been really helpful. I guess I just have really sensitive ears. I would say that there were a couple of places that the teperature dropped to the upper 50's. To an Arizonan it's cold and it's getting colder. I live in the mountains here. But thanks again.

If you have an EMS nearby check them out. I think they also have a web site. I got a head band for the 40-50 degree range and a balaclave for the sub 40 degree says. Both bit under my helmet and are WARM!

What do you use to keep them warm?

My Grandmother used to get teased by us mercilessly... She lived in Florida and would come "up" to Iowa for the month of July. If it got down close to 80 she would put on a sweater..... :D

60's F isn't cold weather. Heck, it even gets below that sometimes in Queensland! In fact, when I go to Tasmania this summer, I'm expecting the temperatures to barely rise above that at any stage. :p

Having said that (given the above destination), maybe I better shut my mouth and take some of the advice in this thread.

I use either a very thin fleece beanie hat, or more often a Lowe Alpine headband.

I use a bandana under the helmet, loosely tied around my head. It provides more of a wind barrier than anything else. When it gets much colder I use a beanie made just for this.

It is fascinating to me to learn about how differently our bodies are "situated" in our environment. I think it has a lot to do with adjusting to your environment.

Low 60's to me is perfect riding weather. I generally ride with a short-sleeve jersey in that temp.

But, anyway, a good sweat band should provide some protection, as others may have suggested. Also, at times I will use a light windbreaker with a hood. The hood tucked inside the helmet gives great warmth (and some sweating at times).

I only use a Balaclava when it is really cold - like maybe 30's or lower. They are very hot and sweaty for me.

Anyway, I hope you get your ears warm. Cold ears are extremely uncomfortable.

'scuse me, but 60 degrees IS NOT COLD. I use a fleece-lined hard hat liner to keep my ears warm in winter. It's a lot less expensive than the equivalent 'gear' for cyclists. I generally start wearing it when temps descend into the 40's or low 50's.

I use a thin fleece beenie until it gets really cold and then I switch to a hard hat liner-good for below zero!

I use a skull cap under my helmet between about 25F and 40F. Below that I go with a balaclava under the helmet.
