today, i was planning on riding my bicycle to the gym in the morning and then maybe doing a short 3 or 4 mile loop on the way back. this was not to happen this morning according to fate. I got halfway out of my development, less then 1/10 mile from my apartment and the chain slipped off the outside of my large chainring... so i put it back on, but this time it did it again about 30ft later, but caught a tooth or something and tore my large chainring. I pedaled back to my apartment slowly on the smaller of the rings of my crank...and then drove to the gym.

i ordered a new FSA chainring that is less skeletonized then the ultra-light aluminum piece i just destroyed.

i will be adjusting my derailers before i ride again, no doubt.

OUCH  I'm glad you didn't get a permanent chain tattoo. That sucks, I hope the parts get in quick for ya

Wow, I can't believe there was an immediate failure like that. Glad to hear your were OK and it was only bike damage and not a crash.

Holy hell! I've never seen such a thing happening before and I've been riding on and off for over 20 years.

You should use the pedals and keep your feet off the chainrings.

good call....though that wasnt quite the case. :D

it actually broke right by my crank arm....so it was no where near my leg. i got lucky though. i was only doing about 5 at the time, otherwise i could have had a crash. i still have no idea how it happened.

i wouldnt even really call it bike damage. its an easily replaceable part...so no major loss.

Make sure when you get your new ring that you check your chain for stretch as well. If the chain is older and stretched it might not fit 100% with the new chain ring and more slippage will occur.

my bike has been ridden a maximum of 5 times...i bought it used and there were no signs the bike had ever been outdoors...idk how the hell this happened.

Just duct tape it back in place :)

I had a similar thing almost happen to me, i noticed my front chain ring was beginning to warp a hair when I went on trail rides(lots of torq climbing hills). I found out it was because my front derailer needed just a little bit of adjustment.

Hope it works out for you and the new one never gives you issues.

^^^ that may be what did it...it probably warped a bit when i was riding it the day before and this was the final killing blow. i'll just check the adjustments before i ride it again...hope the new one gets here soon though.

I'll double your time on bike, and see your observation. I've never seen a failure like that.

I saw it all the time on the BMX track when I was a kid. Kids who'd race a lot and didn't replace cheap-o stocker parts would wear things out quick. Get to the start line, the gate drops, you yank on the bars and stomp on your forward pedal and... *SCHPANG!* Either the chain would snap, or the threads would give out on the hub, or a chainring would collapse.

Another chainring succumbs to the guads of doom.

Big sign of excessive abuse. Back off and spin. Mash only potatos.

There was someone who posted here a picture of their destroyed small chainring.

Impressive guys! :D

Glad you weren't hurt - that would have made a mess mashing up a hill.

i dunno if you read my previous posts...i said i rode the bike only 5 times or less since i got it. no more then 15 miles on the bike. the chainring was not worn what-so-ever when i got it... i was starting from a stop after i put my chain back on from it falling off the last time. i pushed maybe 2 or 3 slow turns and it was jacked like that. it broke at a pin. i'm going with manufacturing defect or void in inferior aluminum. not excessive abuse. and everytime i rode the bike i made an effort to spin as much as possible, even if i was climbing hills on the small chainring. and i know my derailer needs to be adjusted.
