You should get some vernier calipers, they're great for getting answers to lots of these bike sizing questions. You can find seatpost diameter, stem clamp diameter, chainline, many different bolt head sizes, bearing diameters, etc etc etc.

But they're like 50 dollars- well the digital ones! Haha, I had the same question when replacing my headset stuff, what size race do I need!? 26.4 or 27.0? Turned out to be 27.0- I just borrowed my neighbors calipers.

I got a pack of 8 plastic ones for under 10 at Lee Valley. They may not be good enough for rocket science but they work very well for fixing bikes. My father in law hooked me up this xmas with a fine steel set (analog all the way) so now I'm laughing.

You can get digital calipers for $20-$30 on sale. If you want to get analog, get a high quality one with a dial. You are frequently dealing with **** on a bike that is +/- 0.1mm.

I got a digital caliper at Harbor Freight for like $15. It's worked fine so far, though it eats batteries.

You've got the wrong idea operator. Even cheap plastic analog vernier calipers can accurately measure to increments of a 20th of a mm. (The nicer ones do up to a 50th but are slightly harder to use) The beauty of it is, they only have two moving parts. I like them because compared to calipers with a contraption attached they are cheaper, simpler and just an all around more elegant, clever design. They're also trickier to use, which makes them the fixed gear of precision measuring devices. The 0.02mm accurate ones are the brakeless fixed gear of course.
