Fifty Plus (50+) - Cheap Sunglasses for middle-aged guys

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles lets me drive without glasses but I can hardly make out the numbers on my digital watch. Middle-aged eyes. OK distance vision but can barely see my cyclocomputer. I've found progressive addition glasses lousy for cycling; they don't keep out the wind at speed (downhill). All the ads for prescription insert cycling glasses say "single vision lenses only". So, I've worn cheap safety glasses from the home improvement centers for several years, tinted/clear, day/night. Carrying real glasses. Until just recently, when I found some bifocal "fishermen" sunglasses for less than $20! Anything else out there on the market?

could you stick them onto the computer instead of the glasses ?

I wish that I had taken care of my eyes a little better in my youth. Too much exposure to the sun without good sunglass protection.

Tried a version of those I found at Walgreen's but couldn't couldn't get them "just right". Might try them again at some point.

I'm hyperopic. Far vision still 20/20 but near vision is no longer acute. I always wear safety glasses for mowing, edging, running a saw, weedeater, etc.

I buy the DeWalt's in both clear and gray (skip down the page).

Oh yeah, I wear them for bicycling too.

UV-blocking sunglasses (and "clear" lenses, too) have been commonly available going back to at least the 1980's.

Yes, JanMM, I found some slide-over-your-own-prescription-glasses kind in fishing catalogs. Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops. Different tints, not too expensive, and more stylish than the "I just had eye surgery" ones.

I wonder what the heck happened to my eyes. After college I took a Coast Guard physical and my eyes tested out at something like 20/85 or 85/20 which ever is better. The guy giving the test could not beleive it. Today I can not see the big screen tv until I get the eyeballs really focused.

By "cool", do you mean "kinda funny looking"? I'm sure all the young people will be asking me where they can get a pair!

I wear the kind of sunglasses that have little hooks and are spring loaded so they just snap onto my regular glasses (the ones I wear most of the time).

Are they stylish? No Are they fashionable? No.

But they work, they're cheap, they fit easily in a jersey pocket, and if I lose/break/forget 'em, no worries because they're easily and cheaply replaced.

I never did well in fashion and style in any other aspect of my life, so why start now?

If you're not much concerned with looking cool, you might consider Solar Shield Fit-Overs. As their name says, they will fit over regular glasses. I use the stick on lenses, but I just put one on my riding sunglasses, and I put it on upside down, so the flat part matches the bottom of the lense. You get used to seeing the computer and watch with one eye really quickly, becomes second nature and don't think about it.

Hubby has a pair like these we found at Bass Pro Shops. He must wear his prescription glasses and wanted something to fit over them to block out incoming bright light from the top. They're bigger than his prescription pair, but as BFD said not like "I just had eye surgery". He absolutely LOVES them for the glare-blocking benefits (he has developing cataracts). Only $17.00.

They aren't cheap though.
I'd rather spend a little more on a good pair of presciption cycling glasses than an upgrade for my bike.
I haven't bought a pair from them yet but I will before the season starts.

I use these for cycling, they are cheap and functional. No problem reading my computer or making repairs on the road.

That's what I was looking for! Cheap bifocal safety glasses! And if you buy 60 pairs, they're really cheap.
