Nashbar usually has some Terramar polypro base tees that fit me pretty well.

Walmart sells decent shirts for base layers. They cost a little more than $10 each.

Walmart has a compression shirt that I use as both a base layer and a means of keeping loose skin in check. It comes in both long and short sleeved versions. Less than ten bucks a shirt.
under armor "heat gear" and "loose gear" is very good - I haven't tried their "cold gear" though

I wear cold gear long sleeve with a turtle neck if it is cold and cold gear tights over my bibs if it is _really_ cold instead of or in addition to warmers. The two shirts and two tights I have lasted a couple cold seasons up in Connecticut being washed every other day during the winter and a few years of maybe 20x a year use down in Texas. They still keep my dry and warm and don't smell at all.

I wear MSI baselayer top and bottoms from REI. I've got the mid-weight ones and they've worked for me all winter (cold, rainy, PNW winter.) I use 'em for riding and hiking.
I am such an idiot. I meant those featherweight sleaveless things you wear in warmer weather.

Underarmor gear is much better made than the crap at Wal-mart, K-Mart, Target, etc..... How do I know, I own both, because I thought they were the same thing and they are not. The underarmor works much better for me and the other stuff I will use until it is worthlessly worn out, but the UA stuff is much better at keeping me warm.

I wear Russell Dri Power shirts in sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve as a base layer. They are cheaper than UnderArmour and work very well. They run between $10 and $20 and are often on sale. Don't pay list price. I usually get mine @ Bob's Stores or Modell's.
Good luck
Hi guys,
I ordered one from Col D'Lizard. I have a cold weather version from them already.

Just FYI, it runs small, order at least one size large. Two sizes up would be even better...

Kind of a tough question to answer without knowing what shape you happen to be.
I'm a clyde as well, but I'm 6'3" and around 220 (hate the winter, hate it...) so knowing what constitutes a good fit for me probalby would be no help to someone around 5'2" and 500 pounds or what have you.
That said, I like the EMS techwick for cold weather, as well as craft in various configurations (great windstopper baselayer), but don't really wear anything along those lines in the summertime.

If you can fit/afford merino wool, it is by far my favorite base layer below 60 degrees.

I like merino wool better as a mid layer for winter riding - and merino wool sweaters can be found dirt cheap if you prowl places like Target and the thrift stores.

The Nike Dri-Fit apparel is very high quality, and well worth the price premium. Still wicking very well.
I have one tee that is over a decade old and still going strong, and another that is over 5 years old. They were around $25 each.
The Champion brand baselayers from Target seem pretty good for the $15 or so that you pay, but the shoulders are cut very strangely on these shirts. They never seem to sit quite right. This goes for both the loose-fit and body-hugging layers.
I also have an Under Armour Heat Gear long sleeve base layer. It works amazingly well at keeping you cool, almost better than bare skin. It gives a bit of a strange sensation on your skin.
Some of that old Nike stuff was wonderful. Sadly, I have trouble finding clothing of that calibre from them these days.
I will take a look at Target. We have another chain sporting goods store I could try.
Think I will run out to the Mall manana after the gym.

When I wanna go cheap I buy duofold for $9 at TJ Maxx and cut the sleeves down to what I need. In fact I just got back from running and I'm wearing a home-made job as I type this.

Oh yeah, duofold stuff is pretty good, especially for the price. Might not be as snug-fitting as the OP wants for a base layer though.

I have a merino wool t shirt that I can run in for 3 or 4 days before it starts to stink.

Just a note, Col D'Lizard will custom make stuff. Bought several things from them, all custom to fit.
