what would you get for saddle, pedals with clips and straps, and threaded stem if you only have $80

Well, it would highly depend on the condition of what I had already. e.g. if i had non-functioning pedals, or no saddle at all, they would respectively trump any other purchase.

Don't even start on saddles... search for that one.

Whatever I could find off ebay. Actually, to avoid shipping, look on craigslist for a donor bike. Then upgrade as available.

i was thinking about soma kamisori saddle, someone is selling this to me for $25 but its black >.<... can i paint saddle or do something in order to change its color?

about pedals i was thinking about mks sylvan, but its about $40 with clips and straps -_-

and i don't know any good cheap stem...

get MKS GR-9's with clips and straps. For a seatpost/saddle/stem goto recycles in seattle and session their 5 dollar bins.

wade through the LBS co-op for an old selle italia turbo or offshoot: $7-$20
wade through the LBS co-op for old clips/straps pedals: $15
wade through the LBS co-op for threaded stem that is half decent: $25

buy all used and you shouldn't have a problem getting decent quality stuff. craigslist, co-ops and ebay are your friends. fancy LBS's that only sell new stuff are not.

I would go down to performance and get some forte stuff for cheap. Or look on craigslist. Or find a local used bike shop.

supposing that you don't have friends who will lend you old parts until you can buy what you need, i'd get a nitto from the parts bin at your LBS ($20 or less), buy some GR9s with steel MKS clips and straps ($40), and pick up a parts bin saddle for as cheap as you can. the stem won't cause you any problems if you select it well, and if you buy good pedals, they won't either. you're most likely to want to try different saddles, so don't spend too much right away.

Go to your LBS and see what they can do for you to get you riding until you have enough cash to buy a proper saddle and such. The LBS should have a bunch of cheap saddles and pedals.

I took $80 to the t-town swap last year and got TONS of stuff.

seriously, recycled. you could get all that stuff for 20 bucks.

i got a really comfy and god looking saddle a a bmx shop for $12
I think it was a diamond back race saddle.
mks pedal $24.
take off stem or junk box for some off the beating path bike shop $5
mks toe clips $14.

straps = my old christoper straps
saddle = soma kamisori that this guy sell for $25 (i think its worth, right?)
stem = i do not know... haha... (whats the difference between cheap ass stem and expensive stems? i mean the effect?)

Recycled Cycles in Seattle definitely has pedals for you in the bins (I saw some in there with cheap nylon straps that were actually new), saddles are hit and miss, but 90% chance that you will find a decent one, and absolutely you will find a good stem threaded or threadless there for $5, too. I get a lot of stuff there. They put new stuff in the bins daily! Just catch the bus to the bottom of the U-District. They are on Boat street. I even have extra stuff I could sell you if you don't have luck there (but you will).

Though I'm tempted to recommend this in the interest of future hilarity, painting a saddle is almost always a terrible idea. People have re-covered them, but it's a lot of work. I think there might be something about it in the DIY thread (if that's still around).

if we are talking quill stem for a threaded headset, I wouldnt worry about it. they dont make much difference, and it will get you riding.

Interface items/part are where money is best spent.

When I say interface i mean the parts of the bike that actually touch your body.

Saddle, pedals. forget the stem.

recycled cycles is the doo doo. I go there every Saturday and look through the used bins, some really great stuff to be had.

But for 5 bucks I'd go to the Seattle bike swap on Saturday the 23rd and I'm sure you can find lots for the other 75 bucks (I wish my dollar key worked! its at Magnusson park from 9-1pm.

Free Range cycles in Freemont has good prices on GR9s and are nice people too.
