I have this problem, I want to outfit my long haul trucker with racks. I probably won't do any long self sustained tours...well ever. Weekend bike trips most likely, but I have this problem where I tend to want to carry large bulky and often very heavy racks on my bike. I was thinking something with a large top platform would be nice. Surly racks are soo expensive, and nitto seems to be hard to find (plus i'd like silver, but nobody ever seems to make those like tubus)

The other question is there any small racks that would fit on the front, like the Nitto Mini that works with the LHT's existing mounts. Or can the Nitto Mini be modified slightly to work with the fork mounts? I don't need anything giant and fancy in front, just something little for days I want to carry something up there...

thanks

No need to buy expensive racks especially of you are doing short tours. I recommend Axiom racks, like these from aebike.com (each under $30):

or

To get a top-shelf rack up front, you could do what I did -- buy two of these racks. Mount one in the back and the other up front, like this (see my post #5 in this thread):

Would you tour on a Walmart frame (hey you certainly could...), if not why tour on a walmart rack. Real racks cost money, the materials are close to the price of the materials in a frame, and the labour is equal or more expensive, bends and lots of welds.

More fairly reasonable silver racks: IRD and Axiom
