To me he is thinking about what happened to the pleasure the pain used to bring. That is an image of an aging, (yet highly competitive), athlete. Tired, capable, but not enthused.

more like... all of these years racing, all of those wins, including an olympic gold, and two world championships... and i'm stuck on this fugly bike.

Look like sidi mtb shoes to me... pretty easy to run in. Ran half of collegiate nats in them last fall.
