To me he is thinking about what happened to the pleasure the pain used to bring. That is an image of an aging, (yet highly competitive), athlete. Tired, capable, but not enthused.

Yeah, no kidding. I'd be afraid of skidding down the hill with those things.

Look like sidi mtb shoes to me... pretty easy to run in. Ran half of collegiate nats in them last fall.
