Mountain Biking - Went to pick up my new bike last night.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well two months ago I ordered all of the parts for my new hardtail. I ordered:
Santa Cruz Chameleon frame 2003.5
White Brothers XC 1.0 fork
Magura Marta SL brakes
Magura XC Comp wheels (DT Onyx hubs, mavic x223 rims)
xt components including crank
thomson seatpost & stem
FSA XC-190 low rise bar
Continental escape & explorer tires with Stan's

But anyway, the last component finally arrived Monday, the White Brothers fork. According to white brothers it took them a little while to get the parts in to build the fork. But anywho, I finally went to pick up the bike yesterday. It was beautiful! I sat on it and got an idea of where the steerer tube needed to be cut and I told the wrench. This was actually pretty easy since the measurements of the bike are almost identical to my Superlight.

The mechanic said ok and he went to the back to cut the steerer. I stayed out front, I usually just go to the back and hang out but I was giving a hand up front. About 5 minutes later I went to the back to see how things were going. He had just finished filing the steerer tube and was putting a start nut in it.

The next thing he did almost made me cry. When he put the fork thru the headset and the spacers there was no more tube sticking out. Somehow he managed to forget to add the height of the stem to the tube before he cut it. Is it wrong for a grown man to break down and start crying??? I think it scared him to death, he asked me if I was going to kill him.

He told me that he would buy me a new fork, boy was he relieved when I told him that White Brothers would press in a new steerer. They are only going to charge him $50 to put a new steerer tube in. However, they are all going to be off of work Monday thru Thursday for Interbike. What luck!!!! So what has seemed like forever is now going to be two weeks longer! Oh well, at least I have a bike to ride while I'm waiting for it I guess, if I didn't I would probably be in a nut house by now.

OK, done ranting......

Just curious, what would you have done?

Yep, sobbing here too...

The poor mechanic must have felt terrible!

Yeah he felt pretty bad about it. He knows how much I have been looking forward to getting it and riding it.

I couldn't really say too much about it, I did get a great price on everything. They saved me a ton. One of the benefits for riding for them is that they give me everything at cost and all labor is free.

But two months is long enough to wait, another two weeks is going to be next to impossible!

BTW, this is the frame. Check it out, Santa Cruz is finally welding on the disc brake mount. Chameleon frame (http://pictures.care2.com/view/1/203021614)

I'd cry, then cry more!

Then, I'd make sure he gave me a KILLER deal on anything else I needed!

I would cry to! That mech must have felt so bad, we all make mistakes now and then. Atleast you took it in stride, I would have started crying and rushed at the guys neck :) hahha

A short while ago, I had the mech at my LBS install the race on my fork (Race was 26.4 and fork was 27 ) He took care of it right when I walked in no problems, but ended up scratching it (bike I just got repainted) he felt so bad about it, I told him it was no big deal it was going to get a scratch sooner or later.

I waited for more than 2 months for my Scream to get here. No bike for more than 2 months no less.

2 weeks is nothing, just try not to think about it.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again.

BE YOUR OWN DAMM MECHANIC!!!!

that sounds like a crappy time. I would have made him buy me lots of beer right then and there. and of course, replace the fork/stear tube.

Keep in mind I have already waited for two months, this will make 2 1/2 months. You're right though, two weeks is nothing except for when you have already looked at it, touched it, finessed it, well you get my point and then someone just rips it away from you and tells you that you can't have it. That just plain SUCKS!!!!

I felt the same way when my frame kept getting delayed. I had every part ready to go on the bike. I had everything and my frame was delayed forever. It sucks, but there's nothing you can do about it.

There is so something I can do about it, I can cry and complain. Oh yeah, I can also ride. That helped quite a bit, had a great ride this evening. That is until I went over the handlebars when I was playing around in the parking lot after the ride. Just in case anyone had been wondering pavement doesn't give much. Oh yeah, it also doesn't help when there are about 15 people watching. This was after a two hour mountain bike ride that went perfect. Guess that's why you never take your helmet off, ya never know when you are going to wreck.

I was down in Morgantown last weekend! I wish I had known you were down in that area.

We rode mainly Urban though, no place for an XC hardtail.

*****ing solves everything, look at women. They do it and don't get killed to often, so it's gotta be good for something.
