Well two months ago I ordered all of the parts for my new hardtail. I ordered:
Santa Cruz Chameleon frame 2003.5
White Brothers XC 1.0 fork
Magura Marta SL brakes
Magura XC Comp wheels (DT Onyx hubs, mavic x223 rims)
xt components including crank
thomson seatpost & stem
FSA XC-190 low rise bar
Continental escape & explorer tires with Stan's
But anyway, the last component finally arrived Monday, the White Brothers fork. According to white brothers it took them a little while to get the parts in to build the fork. But anywho, I finally went to pick up the bike yesterday. It was beautiful! I sat on it and got an idea of where the steerer tube needed to be cut and I told the wrench. This was actually pretty easy since the measurements of the bike are almost identical to my Superlight.
The mechanic said ok and he went to the back to cut the steerer. I stayed out front, I usually just go to the back and hang out but I was giving a hand up front. About 5 minutes later I went to the back to see how things were going. He had just finished filing the steerer tube and was putting a start nut in it.
The next thing he did almost made me cry. When he put the fork thru the headset and the spacers there was no more tube sticking out. Somehow he managed to forget to add the height of the stem to the tube before he cut it. Is it wrong for a grown man to break down and start crying??? I think it scared him to death, he asked me if I was going to kill him.
He told me that he would buy me a new fork, boy was he relieved when I told him that White Brothers would press in a new steerer. They are only going to charge him $50 to put a new steerer tube in. However, they are all going to be off of work Monday thru Thursday for Interbike. What luck!!!! So what has seemed like forever is now going to be two weeks longer! Oh well, at least I have a bike to ride while I'm waiting for it I guess, if I didn't I would probably be in a nut house by now.
OK, done ranting......
Just curious, what would you have done?
